Lighter, Stronger, Faster: The Herreshoff Legacy
October 18, 2018
Lighter, Stronger, Faster celebrates the spirit of innovation by examining the unparalleled impact on marine design and engineering by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company.
One of the MIT’s earliest students, N. G. Herreshoff (MIT Class of 1870) set new standards in design and manufacturing, realizing remarkable influence and success over a 75-year career. His legendary design genius, engineering innovations and manufacturing efficiency led to the production of six America’s Cup winners and hundreds of other highly regarded vessels, the introduction of modern catamarans, the first torpedo boats for the U.S. Navy, and the first steam-powered fishing vessels in the U.S.
MIT has been producing global leaders in marine technology for more than four generations, making the MIT Museum the ideal venue to tell the story of this transformative, integrated thinker. Through gallery installations and interactive digital media drawn from our renowned Hart Nautical Collection, Herreshoff’s overall contributions to nautical design and craftsmanship will come to life in the exhibition and in the online archive of Herreshoff designs that open and go live, October 2018.
