They enjoy remarkable popularity, and are very handsome in appearance. The model is as faithful in its general dimensions, deck fittings, etc., as is possibie in an actual working steam model at the price. The design and general arrangements of the lamp, boiler, and engine are the result of exhaustive experiments and trials carried out in conjunction with Mr. Victor Harrison (a prize-winner at the Model Engineer Exhibition), and extending over a period of twelve months. We have no hesitation in recommending this as a very reliable working model warship; easy to handle and of sound construction throughout. SPECIFICATION Hull. Carved from selected well-seasoned pine in layers, all joints being securely screwed and cemented. A separate outer lead keel is fitted giving the boat great stability and steering qualities. Decks. Are of pine, and the principal deck fittings are provided, at the same time eliminating more frail and smaller details which are useless on an actual steam working model. . Machinery. This is a departure from the usual idea of steam-boats, and is designed to make the boat as simple and reliable as possible. Engine. Double action high speed marine engine, ‘‘Meteor.’’ Fitted with displacement lubricator. Boiler. Copper, brazed throughout. Contained in a steel boiler casing of special design. This casing has the inner funnels securely attached to it and provides a space between them and the outer funnels, ensuring the latter do not get hot and burn the paint. Exhaust is carried into both funnels. The boiler is fitted with safety-valve. pressure gauge ,and “‘Wheel’’ type steam stop-valve. The steam-pipe is carried through the boiler casing to ensure dry steam to the engine. Spirit Lamp. Entirely new design and quite separate from spirit reservoir, and is so arranged that it contains only a small quantity of spirit at any one time. The actual spirit reservoir is fixed at some distance from the boiler and is sealed so as to avoid risk of fire. The spirit is fed automatically to the lamp as long as this is alight, but when the lamp is extinguished, the supply of spirit immediately ceases. This automatic action is secured in a simple way and is free from complications. The burner is fitted with an asbestos wick and in use never need be taken out of the boat. The spirit reservoir is lifted out of the boat for refilling and so arranged that it cannot be overfilled. j Finish. Itsintroduction is to meet the demand for an inexpensive Power Unit primarily for driving boats, but it can be used equally well for stationary work. The boiler, it will be seen, is of the horizontal type, constructed of solid drawn copper tubing with ends brazed in. The length is 5 inches and the diameter 13 inches. Every boiler is tested to a pressure of 60 Ib. per square inch before being passed at our works. The fittings comprise safety valve and filler, steam supply cock and bright oval funnel of brass, while the whole of the boiler is encased in planished steel. _ The engine is of gun-metal with a cast brass disc pattern flywheel. Many attempts have been made from time to time to devise the perfect Boiler for Model Boat work, and for all-round use it is without doubt true that our Single-Flue Launch Boilers most nearly approach the ideal. | For special purposes, of course, other boilers have their advantages, but our Single-Flue Launch Boilers provide a tea sonable range of water capacity, excellent heating surface arranged in the most beneficial manner, a low centre of bra vity, while the whole weight of the Boiler is utilized to the best advantage, no weight being wasted with asbestos- ined casings as the flame of the burner being entirely surrounded by water any exterior casing is unnecessary. The Boilers are constructed throughout of Seamless Copper Tubing with gun-metal ends. The cross water tubes in the firebox are of seamless Copper and all joints are brazed. The terminals embody the original Exide features of non-interchangeability combined with dissimilarity of colour and shape. For general purposes including model power boat work they are unsurpassed, and they possess the advantage of being as light as efficient construction will allow them to be. Overall dimensions have been kept as small as possible in view of the fact that the average boat model does not allow very much space when the power unit has been fitted. The sizes given below do not comprise the full range, but we have picked out the capacities and voltages mostly in demand. Increased voltage or amperage can always be obtained by coupling up two or more batteries in series or parallel, as circumstances may demand. All batteries are sent out unfilled and not charged. Amp. London and Northampton, Clipper Ship “Cutty Sark.” WV veanty” have been written around the beauty and romance of Sailing Ships of bygone days. The fast Clipper Ships built mainly for the tea trade always excited attention, and among the last of these Cutty Sark is perhaps the most famous. If further proof of the charm of the “ billowing canvas” were necessary, it is undoubtedly provided in the unfailing popularity of Sailing Ship Models. Prompted by numerous inquiries we have at length produced a set of finished parts to enable ship lovers and others to construct for themselves a model of the famous tea clipper. The parts are well made and finished in wood and metal, and are painted or electro-plated just like those used in Exhibition Models of the highest quality which we make for the great Shipping Companies. The scale we have chosen allows the building of a model large enough to create the proper “atmosphere ” without becoming too cumbersome to be accommodated in an apartment of ordinary dimensions. SEEING IS BELIEVING “*In small proportions we just beauties see, And in small measures life may perfect be.”’ JOHNSON. tbs mighty engineering feats of to-day are rather breath-taking, and it is quite beyond the power of words to describe them adequately. Trains run at over 100 miles an hour, the racing cars of Malcolm Campbell and Eyston reach speeds of over 300 m.p.h., while in the air speeds of well over 400 m.p.h. can be attained. In June 1935 the turbo-electric liner ‘‘NORMANDIE”’ broke all records across the Atlantic by travelling eastward from America to Europe at an average speed of 30.31 knots, and shortly afterwards that triumph of British engineering the “QUEEN MARY”’ made a crossing at the average east-bound speed of 30.63 knots and in less than 4 days, The ‘“‘“NORMANDIE”’ has since beaten this, and we now await the entry into service of the new ‘‘QUEEN ELIZABETH”’ to challenge anew for the Blue Riband. Think of the gigantic Sydney Bridge, with its enormous single span over nearly a mile of water—if we could only ride on that wonder of wonders, the ‘‘Magic Carpet’’ and see all these marvels of science for ourselves, we could then gain a much clearer and more UMN vivid idea of the immensity of what has been achieved in modern times. They live in the mind, whereas dull figures or even pictures are quickly forgotten. Their appeal to the eye and to the mind is irresistible. None can pass them by. Children glue their faces to the window to inspect them further. Grown-ups with an eye for detail admire the sweep of hull, broad expanse of wing, or delicate mechanism in the particular model which has captured their fancy. It contains the vital moving unit to arrest attention and the exquisite workmanship to hold the interest of the onlooker and potential customer, and is something quite unique in the world of models. Made to the order of the Grand Union Canal Company for their stand at the British Industries Fair this model represents typical canal scenery—rural and industrial—from green fields and hedges and suburban villas to a canalside factory and its loading activities. It is based on a scale of } inch to the foot, is over 17 ft. long, and contains nine gallons of real water, a working motor barge, and a hand-operated lock, automatically changing the level of the canal by means of a concealed centrifugal pump. The idea of the model is to demonstrate to the public the advantages of canal transport. The exhibit—120 ft. long, consisted of 1} in. gauge scale model double track arranged for continuous running, with 12 ft. diameter loops at each end. Most of one loop is in the form of a hill tunnel, giving scope for artistic scenic effects, and the centre of the track is occupied by a modern design station. The locomotives, rolling stock, signals and railway buildings are 10 m/m. scale and the locomotives, L.M.S. ‘‘ROYAL SCOT”’ and L.M.S. ‘“‘BLACK WATCH,” fitted with special electric motors, were operated by means of the third rail system.
