Catalog: The Laughing Whale – 1992

The Laughing Whale produces two types of model kits: those intended for display alone and those intended for both display and radio control operation. To help in the selection of a kit, we have developed a rating system for our kits. The letter indicates the approximate level of experience needed. A = Beginner, B = Intermediate, c = Advanced

Fast and handsome schooners of this form were built in the mid-19th century in the region around Eastport, Maine. Simple in rig, beautiful in hull form, this kit will offer a challenge to its builder. The kit is complete including blocks and deadeyes, rigging cord, wire and all other fittings. Built largely of bass, and mahogany, the kit includes all necessary wood, sail cloth, etc. to complete the model as pictured. (B) Back in the Gay Nineties, a popular summer pastime was” taking a steam boat for an excursion ride. Yachts as well as commercial craft once ran on most of the major lakes and streams of Maine. Our fantail launch is typical of these small steam yachts. The kit features a basswood planked hull, mahogany coaming and seats, and a scalloped canopy. The model has a pre-cut keel, framing, planking, decks and mahogany trim. It is designed to be powered by our single cylinder Steam Engine and Boiler Kit. Steering is scale with working quadrant and a wheel. Those seeking to radio control the model should find adequate room. Running hardware not included. (B) The Hurricane Island Pulling Boat was designed for the Outward Bound Program by Cy Hamlin of Kennebunkport, Maine. This kit features plank-on-frame construction throughout, using bass and mahogany. Fittings include white metal anchor and chocks, brass oarlocks and centerboard. Wire rigging and cordage are accurately scaled and of excellent quality. Two sheets of plans and an instruction booklet make the Pulling Boat buildable by beginners. Take note: because both surfaces of the hull are visible, construction demands great care and extra thought. This is truly a challenging and beautiful model. LENGTH: 15” SCALE: 1/2” to 1’ 2 THE DRIFTER Kit No. 132… (B) This is a working model of an English Steam Drifter. Boats of this form were popular in the early years of the 20th century. This model was developed fom photographs of several of these vessels and is generally typical of a small steam drifter. (A) Friendship Sloops served the lobstermen of Maine for four decades until 1920 when competition from gasoline powered vessels forced them into retirement. However, the Friendship Sloop, unlike other boats, did not depart the scene to exist only in history books and museum collections. They are built today as they were 60 years ago and their popularity grows every year. A study of the Friendship Sloop’s history reveals the enterprise and the imaginative nature of the fishermen/boatbuilders of 19th century New England. Friendship Sloops, more than any other fishing boat of this period, accentuate a sense of beauty and design. The kit is a scale model of a real Friendship Sloop, featuring plank construction. Keel and frame members come pre-cut. The kit is complete including wooden blocks, deadeyes, sail cloth and rigging cord. LENGTH: 31” SCALE: 1” to 1’ This is a model of a traditional Grand Banks Dory. It is a single dory of the type carried on the Grand Banks Fishing Schooners. THE FRIENDSHIP SLOOP THE GRAND BANKS DORY Kit No. 115B . . . (B) This is the same boat as above but on a smaller scale. LENGTH: 16” SCALE: 1/2” to 1’ Being inexpensive and handy, dories of this form were also used for coastal fishing and lobstering. With a sharp bow and narrow transom, flaring sides and flat bottom, the Dory is seaworthy and easy to build. The kit includes illustrated instructions created with the inexperienced builder in mind. Several schools use this kit to illustrate full-scale boat construction. The kit includes all the materials necessary to build the model as shown, less the baseboard. Hardwoods are used throughout. The small size and complexity of this model are suitable for the experienced model builder seeking a finished model that is both delicate and handsome. LENGTH: 10” THE CATBOAT Kit No. 105… . (B) The Catboat has been recognized as one of the true American boats. The model illustrated shows the most successful variant, the Cape Cod Catboat. The difficult conditions along the Cape shore led to the development of an extraordinary boat. Used for both fishing and lobstering, one and sometimes two men worked as much as 30 miles offshore in shoal waters with strong tides, and when done, raced to market with their catch. In other words, the boats had to be shoal draft, fast, seaworthy, weatherly, handy and inexpensive. It is no wonder that the interest in the Catboat as a yacht is on the increase. The model is of plank construction with basswood and mahogany pre-cut parts. Material for planking, cabin, deck, keel, rudder, spars, sails, rigging cord and complete fittings are included. Full-scale Swampscott Dories were the most highly developed variant of the dory every built, particularly with reference to speed, ease of handling and seaworthiness. These dories came into being when it was possible to buy clear, wide pine boards cheaply. This model is based on authentic lines for a traditional Swampscott Dory. It has only four strakes to a side. In the full scale vessel, this saved labor and permitted rapid construction. These qualities are carried over into the model as it is both quick and simple to build.
