Stability Project Entry Form

This form is used to submit data on model yachts to be included in the Design Comparison Table that calculates Relative Stability and other attributes of a model yacht design based on a few design parameters. The project was described in “Simple Quantitative Comparisons of Model Sailboat Designs” by John Henderson in The Model Yacht, Vol 26, No 2, Summer 2025 issue.

The Design Comparison Table is intended for people to be able to compare existing model yacht designs to help them select a design that they want to build and sail. If you are a designer and you want to test out a new design or just play with the parameters, you can download an Excel Spreadsheet with the formulae in place that you can use on your local machine. Displacement or total weight of model - in pounds and decimals. So 17 1/2 pounds would be 17.5, not 17 lb 8 oz.

Ballast Weight (lb) *

The weight of the ballast only - in pounds and decimals. This may have to be estimated.

Draft (in) *

Depth from the waterline to the bottom of the keel - in inches and decimals.

Beam (in) *

Maximum beam or width of boat - in inches and decimals

Mast Height (in) *

This is the measurement of the highest point of the sail over the deck. This could be the highest point the sail attaches to the mast or the peak of a gaff sail, whichever is higher. In inches and decimals.

Performance comments

Add notes on how the model sails in different wind conditions or any other detail related to performance.

Other comments

Supply any important details not captured in the above fields.
