Mr. E. Hunt of the Hove Club was O.O.D., assisted by Guildford Club members. The M. & S. District had invited other Districts to compete, and Bournville accepted the invitation on behalf of Midland District. Eighteen boats representing nine clubs came to the start at 10.15 a.m. in a top suit southerly breeze giving reaching conditions for the first few heats. Later it veered to S. West, giving perfect conditions for beat and run. An interesting feature of team racing is the rapidity with which leading teams change with each heat. Thus every heat becomes a ‘cliff-hanger’ involving 10 points per team, with consequent tension being maintained all day. By lunch time with less than half Top, left to right, F. R. Edmonson THE Swindon M.P.B.E.C, The Swindon Model Power Boat and Engineering Club held its annual regatta at Cheney Manor Lake, Swindon, on Sunday, May 11th, 1969. This year it was decided to cover events for Radio Control boats, Straight Running boats and Hydroplanes. Despite the rain which occurred during the previous days, which left the surroundings of the lake like a mud bath, the weather on the day was reasonable with only one shower early on. On the water some good performances were achieved by the 85 entries from 13 clubs. The best of these was by J. Blacknell (St. Albans) in the 5 c.c. Hydroplane Class when the British record was raised (subject to ratification) to 78.24 m.p.h. for the 440 yd. course, this also broke the course record. C. Coleman (St. Albans) also achieved over 70 m.p.h. with his 24 c.c. airscrew hydroplane, this being the first time airscrew hydroplanes have been run on the lake. In_ the Nomination event for Straight Running boats N. Cole narrowly beat his father to win the event whilst G. Kirkham completed the double for the home club by winning the steering event with 13 pts. J. Blacknell, Mrs, O. Cockman and C. Lane scored 11 pts. to tie for 2nd one: after a re-run the unfortunate competitor was C. ane. The Swindon Corporation gave permission for the whole lake to be used on this occasion so the full Naviga course was used for the Radio Control events. The steering event was won by F. Body (Portsmouth) with three boats tying for 2nd place. In the speed event good times were recorded, the fastest of these being W. Pollitt (Southampton) in the 10 c.c. class. High Tension D. Stagg Lord Mays Estoril the total heats completed, the lead had changed five times and Bournville with 51 points led Clapham and Guildford, each with 49, Hove with 46, and Southampton with 45. Resails, particularly downwind, were numerous and by mid afternoon the fight was really on with Guildford, Bournville and Clapham just pulling out clear of the field, but by no means clear of each other. The last heat was completed at 6.20 p.m. and tea was taken whilst the O.0.D. wrestled with the resail position. After 24 resails had been completed Guildford had retained their title with 112 points, Bournville second with 102, and Clapham third with 98 points. Sixteen heats were sailed, which reflected on the excellent co-operation between officials and skippers, sportsmanship was of the highest order and a wonderful day’s sport enjoyed by all. Roundabout High Tension High Tension F, Shattock |. C. Kidd Warlord Littlejohn terest with their unusual fin and bulb keel formats, and in the case of Don Hardwicke’s Sohrab some extremely fine, if mysterious, deck ‘machinery’. Another unusual feature was the use of a T section plywood mainboom, allied to a luff sail. Graham Reeves’ new boat—a new Lewis design—went very fast at times both on and off the wind, although the very large jib area appeared to require an accurate trim to produce maximum performance. The Guildford boats to the Stollery/Shepherd Roundabout design showed their acceleration downwind, planing very fast over the rough water at the leeward end, without any splashing or disturbance. Gwyneth, skippered by Chris Dicks, showed that its performance was up to the standard of building that won it the award for Working Yachts at the Model Engineer Exhibition in January. It was also interesting to see Chris Edmonson from Southampton, finishing as second highest boat with his Jester, a G.R.P. version of the High Tension design. Altogether in the opinion of all — Officials, Skippers, Mates and just spectators—a superb day’s. sailing which the Guildford Club were privileged to run and just win. REGATTAS The prizes were presented by Mrs. Joy Colbeck, wife of the M.P.B.A. Hon. Gen. Secretary, whom we were very pleased to welcome on their first visit to Swindon, thereby completing a very pleasant day. Straight Running Nomination 1st N. Cole 2nd G. Cole 3rd _ R.
