OCTOBER 1969 THREE SHILLINGS U.S.A. & CANADA SEVENTY CENTS HOBBY MAGAZINE 1969 British Open *A’ Class Championships SHE Championships were held at Fleetwood, from July 27-August 3rd, in what is now becoming known as Fleetwood Championship weather, a nearly perfect week from the sunshine point of view, but poor fluctuating winds from the competitors’ angle. There was an entry of 40 boats, one each from Belgium, Holland and Northern Ireland, two from France and Scotland, three from Germany, four from Denmark, and 26 from 11 different English clubs. The boats were divided into four fleets, so that some time off could be had by the yachtsmen, but because of the poor conditions only two half days could be left free. Sunday was warm and sunny, and seven heats were sailed, with Checkmate getting top marks, 35/35, 418 Emperor 33, and Bingo Cat 29. Winds were variable and some skippers took a long time to get the feel of the conditions. On Monday and Tuesday the fleets split up, but by Tuesday evening, after one wet day, 19 boards had been completed. At this half way stage Checkmate was still in the lead, with 78/95, Emperor second, with 74, and the Danish Fascination third with 72. Bob Cat and Serica were close behind, with 69. There had been a few casualties during Tuesday with the stronger winds; The Lady Isle was dropped and her stays snapped, but she escaped more damage as “She was Clyde built’! Chris Dicks dropped the stern of Emperor and, with the kind help of other competitors, had to make hurried repairs to the skeg. The heat was overpowering sometimes, competitors having to put on more clothes to prevent sunburn. By Thursday evening the top boats had drawn away from the rest of the fleet, Checkmate had lost the lead to Emperor, who now had 128, Bill Poole having 124, and Bob Cat 123, Genesis 120 and Fascination 119. Friday was obviously going to prove vital, 25 points to sail for. The winds were a bit more steady on Friday, but nerves were not, and a few slip-ups by all the top boats resulted in an even closer position at lunch time. Two heats left, and Emperor had 138, Checkmate 136, Bob Cat 135. Then one heat left and Emperor had 143, Checkmate 139, Bob Cat 140. Emperor had to sail Moby Dick, but Checkmate and Bob Cat had to sail each other. Emperor lost the beat, but got his run, 145. Bob Cat had weather berth, and got the beat, and then took the run, 145. As far as anyone knew, this had never happened before, and it looked as if the sail off would depend on weather berth. Bob Burton won the draw, and just won windward beat. On adding up the scores later, it was seen that Bob Cat had won 31 beats to Emperor’s 29, not counting the last one. The top six boats were all of different designs. Bob Cat is a fibreglass Highlander, designed by Priest, and has been in the prize list every year. Emperor is Chris Dick’s own latest design, and is a beautiful looking boat, perfectly rigged, as were all the top boats. Some of the yachts lower down the fleet could stand no chance with their inferior fittings, making it impossible to get a consistent trim. Heading, top left, Bob Burton checks the trim of his winning Bob Cat and top right, starting a run with Gopak, nearest camera. Bottom, left to right, Kami Sama watched by Dennis Lippett, on one of the fresher days, Fascination, and Checkmate romping along. Right, winning Neptune Trophy team (E. Latham, W. Poole, Checkmate, C. & W. Jones, Black Tarquin, and K. Roberts, H. Dodd, Gopak). 419 (continued on page 430) it, me MODEL BOATS A SIMPLE 226 GUYING WIRE SLIDER VANE GEAR e b Sg F. R. SHEPHERD PSHE vane gear shown in the accompanying drawings is my attempt to combine the best points of a number of breakback type vanes. Basically it is the Jones type body which seems GUYING FRAME WI6 “WIRE ideal for attaching pointers, guying device, etc., the halves being screwed together. The feather arm and attached stops are again very similar to the Jones type, though here the pin and slot linkage is reversed. This way a better lock is obtained, but a light spring is still needed to bridge the two moving arms. The guying attachment shown has proved very successful, springs are chosen in preference to elastic, as this seems to be something or nothing (a very short guy or none at all) whereas springs provide a very smooth, positive action. The linkage between vane and rudder is adjustable to give a ratio of between 1-1 to 3-1. I feel this has many advantages in that when using the 3-1 ratio it can provide the power one needs when sailing off wind. When using the 1-1 ratio, its aes Pm RE Tn a — responsiveness to windward can be of great help. In tricky reaching conditions a sensitive vane is a liability, but by using the 3-1 ratio it is possible to reduce the tendency for the boat to suddenly shoot up to weather or bear away quickly when hit by a WEIGHT ARM /8G x 3/8″ STRIP gust. Ideally, the material to use is stainless steel; this is rather difficult to work by hand but with patience it can be done. Certain parts have to be made on a lathe, but being modellers we can usually find someone to do this for us. I feel that properly constructed, this vane is as good as any breakback type, having the best points of the Jones vane, and the ruggedness of the Corby.
