A desirable aim would be to get all controls down to the simplest, cheapest, most efficient and reliable engineering devices possible as part of the general development of the complete craft. The overriding requirement, in any performance sailing craft, of having a high power/weight ratio \V/2 sail area V3 displacement will inhibit the overlavish use of expensive gadgetry on board, and keep design in contact with commonsense and reality. | have discussed these ideas informally with the committee of my club, the Leeds and Bradford Model Racing Yacht Club, and hope they will accept a trophy from me, known as the “Sailing Development Trophy’’, open to anyone to compete in a model equivalent of the “Portland Speed Trials’ with world records in various sail area classes. To avoid the production of useless ‘’freaks’’, speeds are to be a mean of two runs in two directions. This would also allow vane boats to compete on equal terms with radio control. Such a competition would enable full-size and model designers to take design and development “gambles’’ without antagonising their bank managers. Actual details of running and timing the sailing speed trials call for considerable thought, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. | would hope to get MYA recognition of the event, and perhaps have winning designs and presentation of the Trophy at the Boat Show, so as to give some real recognition of the winner’s efforts. In order to avoid upsetting yachtsmen who havea real regard for traditional ideas and design, may | point out that relaxing just three rules in, for example, the model Marblehead Class, could produce a better looking and faster yacht. Rules specify overall length to be 50in+or—zin which produces a rather “chopped off’ appearance in profile, in order to get maximum waterline length within the rule. If W/L length were left around 50in but overhang fore and aft were allowed, the result could be a handsome yacht which could sail better in a chop, with the same power to carry sail, perhaps with a lower planing speed, and, with the reserve buoyancy forward, could be pressed harder downwind. It would not offend the “traditional” eye either. The 800 sq in (nominal) sail area in this class can already be stretched (within the rules) to around 1,000 sq in so why not cancel the rule, and let anyone who is clever enough use more sail power? The rule that limits the jib height to 80% of the main is often ignored in full size practice. None of these alterations would add appreciably to the cost of building and sailing a Marblehead. As a happily retired engineer, | am having a whale of a time developing a cat, which can’t be blown over, has an automatic sail winch (controlled by wind-vane), which trims the sails to the apparent wind, radio- control of steering, and using “hydrodynamic” ballast (a hydrofoil) on the keel-fin. This results in an all up weight (at present) of 9lb, with 63 sq ft of sail area, and it’s beginning to sail very nicely. Own design and manufacture, cost to date only a few pounds, and it looks good. | do practise what | am preaching albeit in a slightly more unorthodox manner, but that is my real enjoyment in modelling. |do have two Marbleheads (R/C).” In the past, it has been felt that the 10-rater class gives plenty of scope for experiment, although it excludes multi-hulls. Vaneoperated sheeting mechanisms go back some 25 years, and went out of favour because skippers enjoyed controlling the sails themselves, or felt that skipper-control was more flexible. A difficulty is that existing classes specifically or generally ban many of the ideas and gadgets that might be expected to emerge from such trials, which has possibly been a major deterrent in the past; there is in fact a very good case for such bans.
