They were Norman Fish and Gill Windsor of the Fleetwood Model Yacht Club who had gone to sail their A Class model yacht Rapture K616 in the German A Class championships. “Weary and nerve shattered” because all the troubles started on the Sunday night of the same week when Mr. Fish was driving back to a training college in Staffordshire. He stopped to pick up a friend in Blackpool and, after rearranging luggage in the car, left the keel of the boat lying in the middle of the road. This loss was not discovered until 9.30 a.m. on the following morning, when frantic phone calls to the Blackpool police eventually located it, at 8.00 that night! This resulted in a 200 mile drive after tea on Wednesday to collect it. On the way back the petrol pump failed, so this then took most of Thursday night to repair, with the thought of a 1,600 mile journey ahead; however, at last we left Stafford at 1.30 p.m. on Friday, and after driving down (through pouring rain) arrived in Dover at 8.30 only to find that the battery was flat, and the car had to be pushed every time we wanted to start it . . . We moved on the car ferry at Dover at 11 o’clock and promptly “turned in” only to be awakened at 4 o’clock in the morning ready for disembarking at Ostend, 5.30 a.m. It took only two hours to cross Belgium and we were having breakfast on the border of Holland at 7.30 am. Then followed a most interesting time driving through Holland and into Germany, where we made our next stop at Bremen and thence on to Hamburg, to arrive there at approximately 6 o’clock, after a 600 mile journey. Hotel accommodation was provided for us by the German association, and we were booked into a motel close to the centre of Hamburg and the area buoyed out approximately 300 yards long and Sailing is done in the tournament system as in England, but as there are no ponds or small lakes they have to sail on large lakes, where they have an each skipper gets into an outboard motor boat and River Alster. 80 yards wide (see sketch) with a floating pontoon at either end. This meant that on Tuesday night Kai Ipsen was leading, and as the wind dropped to a flat calm on Wednesday the race was brought to a close at 3 p.m. in the afternoon with the final placings as follows :— reach the line of buoys (side of lake) they are turned off, either by pole or turned and retrimmed by the skipper leaning over the side of the motor boat. The motor boat then drives to the other side of the lake to await the arrival of the models on that tack. When the models are across the finishing line they are 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. lifted out of the water and are taken to the pontoons where they are reset for the run down, when the same procedure is used and the boats have to be retrimmed every time they come in line with the buoys. As there were only four motor boats available only two pairs could be sailed at once, which made the racing slow compared with English standards, but this was offset by the fact that the event was staged on the forecourt of a beer garden and yacht station where eats and drinks were sold all day long. As this was the warmest and sunniest period of their summer we therefore had a very relaxing and enjoyable time. Racing commenced at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning and after a break for lunch at approximately 2 p.m. broke off at 6.30 p.m. The wind had been a good top suit beat and run all day and ended with Rapture (N. J. Fish, England) and Miss Pat (H. Boussy, France) tying for top place with maximum points. There were 16 entries in all, three from Denmark, Revanche II Rapture Konigin Miss Pat Revanche I Caribee Kai Ipsen N. J. Fish Ki. Polahn H. Boussy Fr. Jessen H. Kretchmann Denmark England Hamburg France Denmark Berlin The prize presentation followed with a dinner at the rowing club at 5 o’clock where all the skippers and mates of the foreign boats received souvenirs as well as the winning boats their prizes. Evening entertainment was provided on the Monday night by a visit to the house of Mr. Jacobson who entertained us with a very good film show of last year’s A Class championships at Fleetwood, and then on Tuesday night to the house of Carl Boughort who again has a very good selection of films from past events during recent years in England. Finally on Thursday it was time to think of leaving. However, we still had three days left of our stay in Germany, so we drove down to Hanover and thence into the country to stay overnight at Winterbourg which is a lovely winter sports resort. On Friday we took the autobahn to Frankfurt and Weisbaden, and then motored along the length of the Rhine to stay overnight at Koln, after which we had to motor through Belgium to catch the night boat back to Dover and home. If any of our German friends should read this we should like to offer our sincere thanks for a very enjoyable week. one from France, one from Gt. Britain, and 11 from Germany; Hamburg four, Kiel three, and Berlin four. Racing began on Monday at 9 a.m. and on Tuesday morning in a light wind Rapture fell foul of Kai Ipsen of Denmark who took him for 5 pts. and then after a disqualification to windward he lost 2 pts. to M. Boussy and 3 pts. to Guntator, H. MODEL WORK * FEIT AND FORGET x “REPTONE” is the answer to your boat installation, suitable for any hull of 18 inches or over.
