NOVEMBER 1963 U.S.A. & FORTY CANADA CENTS ~ Model Ships – Cars – Yachts – Engineering ML 1963 British Open A Class Championships and International Fleetwood, August 18-25 ODEL yachtsmen’s chief reaction to the Fleetwood International meeting this year will undoubtedly be delight that success has at last crowned the efforts of that cheery little Frenchman, Horace Boussy, who has competed since 1935 in every A Class Championship with varying degrees of misfortune and made his first win such a convincing one. Bravo indeed! The British Open Championship also proved a popular win with Clapham club’s Bob Burton, with a clubmate lying third. For skippers not used to heavy coastal winds, these were indeed fine performances. The fact that Highlanders won both events was no doubt more than consolation to Dick Priest, who sailed the original Highlander into second place. Statistically it is interesting to note that there were eight boats to Priest designs, eight from John Lewis, and eight stemming from the late Bill Daniels’ Jill, the latest version of which is the Drumbeat family. Probably no A Class Championship of recent years has been quite so evenly matched; in the first half of the week, with Moonshine leading, any of at least 20 boats could have come through to win, and the closely-spaced final scores at the top end tell their own story. By the Friday evening, however, only one boat could have caught Reward (Highlander had 540 a bye) and then only if it made the possible 10 and Reward dropped 10. Weatherwise the wind was generally fresh except on Thursday, though not always up and down the lake. Sunday was N.N.W. backing to W. by N., freshening, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday almost due W., fresh (strong on Wednesday), Thursday light S. veering W., Friday moderate S. by W. swinging to nearly straight down the lake and freshening, Saturday fresh to strong, similar. There was exciting sailing on most days, becoming spectacular when the wind strengthened. Throughout O.0.D. Frank Boardman, starter George Leeds, and the other invaluable officials kept things moving at a smart pace, the decision to divide the fleet into four sections helping smoothness and giving crews some free half days. The International race for the Yachting Monthly cup started at 3 p.m. on Saturday in a fresh westerly, with six countries represented, seven heats being sailed. On Sunday a light S.W. wind made sailing tricky; the result was declared at the agreed finishing time after a total of 15 heats. Positions were (Saturday score in brackets): 1, H. Boussy, France (27), 50. 2, H. A.
