SPARE TIME, WHAT SPARE TIME??? Some of you will know that since Christmas I have changed my job and can now be found at home from time to time during the day. I have already picked up a number of phone enquiries during the day and it is worth giving the line a try if you find it more convenient, UK readers in the south east may also find it useful that I am holding stocks of a wide range of hulls, fittings, sails, and radio spares so that you can get a complete boat from here if you need one!! More useful perhaps for the newcomer that the committed who probably know where to go to get the bits and pieces one needs direct from their regular suppliers. CLUB NEWS ——— WEYMOUTH The MYC. Despite the limited number of races, only 21 in the week, of which 3 were discards, the best skippers moved largely to their usual position at the top end of the fleet, one exception being Ian Cole who did’nt seem to get his act together all week, whereas Mike Kemp seemed to relish the conditions, finishing only two places behind the ‘works’ No Secret with his vane design Suls Bula. The Centenary year race for the 10 Rater class cannot be said to have run as smoothly as one could have wished, with major prerace problems with sponsorship, appalling weather problems during the raceweek, and an organisation stretched to the limits at times to deal with the workload without sinking the willing volunteers who were trying hard to provide competitors with some high quality racing. An early decision was taken by the local club to use the open sea adjacent to the prestigious Royal Goteberg Yacht Club in order to impress the big boat sailors with the sight of good quality model r/c yacht racing, instead of useing their usual inland lake. This meant that the site was in use for the first time during the regatta and in hindsight it can be seen that a practice regatta would have shown the club some of the administration problems. No ‘race observers’ as such were used, with members of the JURY spending time passive observing on a random basis, and protesting any boats they claimed had infringed after their race had finished. Opinions are divided on whether this application of fullsize yachtracing practice can properly be used at model size, but its introduction at a World Championship at which most of the competitors were unfamiliar with the system and also had a language problem did not improve the somewhat ‘twitchy’ atmosphere. Once one got used to the waves and the strong wind, sometimes up to limit 20knot strength, sailing was very enjoyable, and the courses were always full Olympic pattern, and of very good length, so much so in fact that some skippers had problems with depth perception at wing marks. Entries were recieved from 12 countries, with large contingents from Germany, France, and Italy ,Spain{ Gran Canarias), and two from Canada and one from Australia to give a flavour of true world competition. 23 races were sailed, with 3 discards allowed, some skippers useing one of these for their meeting with the local jellyfish which seemed to have a liking for model yacht keels, stopping boats dead in the water from time to time. THE BOATS AND SKIPPERS. Janusz Walicki followed on his second place in Holland with a convincing win in the 10 Raters, useing his long version of his Skalpel. apart from a DSQ for a startline infringment costing 40 points, his next worst score was an CMAN Peter Ebel, another German from Munchen, sailed a Karneol design by G. In September they are holding a first National Championships for the M class at Attersee, which will also be a rankinglist regatta for next year's Berlin World Championships. Austria is one of several European countries that has both IMYRU and Naviga sailors, and it was under the Naviga banner that this year’s Wolfgangsee regatta took place. Entry for the 10 Rater was increased to 27 boats, whereas the M class dropped to 57 boats. There was a first regatta for the new One-Meter class which raised three entries only tow months after the rule was adopted. Travellers from afar include Bengt Andersin{ Sweden] ,Henri Fabrequef{South France] Tom Koornhof{Holland] and Harry Drenth from Hungary. AUSTRALIA. For the benefit of any international travellers or Englishmen with relations to visit, the 1988 nationals will be held in Victoria over the period 2/14 January. All R/C, with M,10,and A class, and as a result the State Champs in what is the best supported area of Australia will now be on March5/7, Labour Day Weekend Two new lakes are being built in the Melbourne area!!!! Western Australia has seen an increase in interest in radio A class such that nine boats competed for their state event in MAY this year. Eric Fisher won sailing a ply-wood Hi-Ho by Brewer, fighting off some new Trolleyjacks. A Brewer Tridentlissue 20 p15] took second place for Des Ledger who improved from a slow start in light wind conditions. BRAZIL. Back in April the M class championships saw 44 boats compete in Brazil's largest city Sao Paulo for the seventh running of the event. C.V.De Souza took a No Secret back to Brazil from Fleetwood and it won convincingly, with Jorge Bercht second sailing a Cedar 3/4 sailed at fleetwood by Jean Louis Vincent. these two had a big margin on third place Joao deDeus who sailed a new boat of his own design. FRANCE. Rumours that Pierre Jahan had packed up model sailing after Fleetwood proved unfounded when I visited the 1987 French nationals on a purpose built new lake at Armbout Cappel {Dunkirk]. On a lake of 250m by 225m oval and good wind he was pipped by old rival Paul Lucas, 55.0 to 55.4. with Phillippe Sol third om 57.7. Jahan was sailing his old boat, having sold the newer one to the italian Ciardi. 46 competitors, with 15 boat fleets, Olympic courses, and Claude Vidal as chief observer wired up to a P.A system so skippers could not miss his calls!!! It has been defined as follows: a2 3 (L/10) = water line in cm L LW1 G weight in g For planing in particular, that is in strong wind, the weight takes a major role, for the lighter the ship the less power is required for lifting the ship out of the water and for bringing it into the planing condition. In light wind the weight is of little importance because the speed is determined mainly by the frictional resistance which depends on the speed and the wetted surface but not on the weight of the ship. Using the length/displacement ratio one can divide yachts and dinghies into several categories: a) Planing boats with a ratio up to M = 5, included here are the FD, 470, and also a keel boat like the Tempest. b) Light displacement yachts with limited planing performance and up to M = 10. c) Pure displacement yachts with M larger than 10. An M-yacht with a waterline length of 125 cm and a total weight of 6.5 Here is confirmation kg would have a weight-length ratio of M = 3.3. that it is possible to plane with model yachts.
