For model radio-control these are amended by a leaflet costing 50p from IMYRU This leaflet modified the definition of crew etc and the sizes of thing to model scale, including the definition of overlaps and distances from marks etc. To have full knowledge of the rules therefore you need both documents at a total cost of £4.00. These rules cover the period of 1985/68. PERMANENT COMMITTEE MEETING. LETTERS Dear Editor, On looking at full size yachts and cruisere I notice the lack of a skeg before the rudder. Model radio yachts follows this idea with spade type rudders. Why then do vane designs have a skeg? Would it be possible to have a column answering this sort of query in future editions of MYN? Ian Cooke. Dear Editor, 6 Metres. ” Any new design is to a certain extent at a disadvantage compared with these pre-1984 designs, the only ones which took advantage of the ‘loopholes’. It is now a tall order to produce an ‘improvement’ over these hulls.” [G. Amicalement, Dear Un ami de voile! Editor, In issue 29 of MYN you quoted an extract that I published in the Guildford MYC Newsletter regarding touching a starting mark. I am sure you and many others will have realised that the original article was published by G Sambrooke Sturgess in one of his books on Yacht Racing Rules, and perhaps you will be kind enough to make a suitable acknowledgement in the next issue of MYN. Sincerely, Dear David Coode. Editor, First, I wish to thank all my new friends in Europe for a great race and a great time at the European Championship in Den Bosch this summer. I especially wish to thank Chris Jackson who encouraged me enter the race and opened up long neglected relations between AMYA and IMYRU. I also want to thank all of you who talked to me about your own boat designs and what makes them work. I am also writing in because I believe your readers may be interested in some additional information about the boat I sailed in Holland to win the European Championship The boat was an Archer, my most recent Marblehead design. I designed it last winter, and the race in Den Bosch was the first championship in which it was entered. Whilst the boat was originally designed to be sailed in New York racing conditions, I have developed and tuned the boat so that it is equally competitive in the heavier winds found in Europe and in other parts of the United States. Racing in Holland was a great opportunity for me. Not only did I enjoy meeting competitore from all over Europe, but I was able to see, at last, how boat design varies in other countries. With what I learned watching the other boats compete, and what I learnes about the Archer during the final day and a half of the competition in Den Bosch when the wind picked up, I was able to return to New York and further tune my boat for more varied weather conditions. The improvements were well timed. In August I entered the Archer in and won both the Marblehead and 10R United States championships. two days of winds that reached over 20 knots!! The latter was held during Thank you all for your friendship and support. I look forward to seeing you in Sincerely, Jon Elmaleh. THE STORY BEGINS. For many years IMYRU has had a One-Meter in most countries except just scrap the At rule, the same time allow both area. like or modify Naviga single and perhaps France had a it or class rule and have a rule called multihulls to 10 In the boat, raters and USA and with a very if in particular the ‘X’ class which was specifying essentially only sail west craft. coast, a move to provide 600sq a lower ins, cost had been popular. to San Diego published a full intended to old M class hulls with a sailarea more any experimental on the into disuse new one, length of One metre and restricted sailplan of drafted and proved On my visit few fallen the question arose as to whether to compete, This had developed into a class of which had last text of year this rule I met the men who started the class, and in the March edition of MYN. WAVIGA’S RAPID ACTION. Naviga decided to scrap the effort to encourage X class and substitute younger sailors and the smaller indeed anyone put circumstances by the cost of the current M class boats. They more or less copied the original added some more detailed sail and rig and INYRU went ahead dimensions measurements and a immediately off One-Meter by reason of in the OLYMPIC ONE-METER rule, weight restriction on the hull into print. INVESTIGATES. IMYRU have adopted a more cautious approach and have circulated all countries a draft of their OLYMPIC and NAVIGA rules. in the final stages proposals, The because is also worth pointing out and are technical of the M rule closely at another rule It in an looking committee of revision until of pressure of that there are proper the IMYRU were existing heavily mid-May and were unable involved to look time. boats sailing condition which would be rendered obsolete matters deserve also at member to the existing by a rule rule change, in and such consideration. THE 36” CLASS PROBLEM. The existence of Australia, boats of this length in countries such as USA, Canada, UK, South Africa and New Zealand makes for a dilemma as the effect of a new class on existing skippers and boats has caused some discussion in these countries. The problem with the 36″ boats is that each country has modified their rule to suit local condition and as a result none of these boats could compete with each other on equal terms as they stand. For example in the UK depth is restricted to 11″ from deck edge to keel bottom, not so in USA, although there they have two classes, one with unlimited sail area, the other limited to 600sq ins.The South Africans have a one-design boat with much greater keel depth than in UK. The boats that would seem to be least able to compete within the framework established for the one-metres are the UK boats with existing shallow draft keels which would be difficult to modify, whereas boats with large sail readily cut down their toprig to the sail 65″ area and rig height rigs could more to the 600sq in and maximum specified. SHOULD I BUILD ONE? This is the big question asked by many of the letters and phone calls to MY over the last six months. The final answer to some extent depends on local interest in alternative classes and the first thing to do is contact the local club if there is one. If you are on a limited budjet then the price of even second hand M boats{see the for sale column) looks a bit much, and the alternatives are the 36” or One-Metre. The 36” class allows alternate rigs of any sailarea, and a competitive boat will have three or four rigs, and because of the restricted draught these will be needed for different winds quite regularly 6 The One-metre will sail on this rig performance As the the is restricted in light within a stuff wind increases you very deep keel to a maximum sail wide to a will allows one area and rig height spectrum of 36, but on windstrength, level losing a terms with the in strong wind need to reduce to carry the full area which means you little other boats. to a second suit, but in quite gusty wind. TRAPEZIUM — HULL Part 4 The mentioned advantages and disadvantages of the previously described hull shapes lead to the development of the trapezium hull. If one talks of a ship with a trapezium-hull then this should not mean that the trapezium shape runs from the bow to the stern, it only characterizes the hull shape (hull with the biggest hull area). The advantages of the trapezium-hull lie therefore most of all in the combination of the good characteristics of other hull shapes. For example this includes the obviously smaller wetted area than can be found on a real U-hull and the nevertheless similarly good form stability. The wetted area of the trapezium-hull lies only slightly above the radial-hull for hulls of equal A displacement. further important behaviour to of achieve designer. is a to model the from avoid angles other large break away 16 shape result one can an at stern, than for in an hull early angle not water see the of the is to say heeling trapezium separation I the is become these x would, to larger enlarged resulting with chance marked marked one water a lengths This thus If hull of have equal the directly the there angles hull. of connection of symmetry angle, wants 30 degrees result around area. two one direction. symmetry stern of from the the symmetrical imagination do but this the that the of One same the longitudinal In in x. almost heeling upon alone in another. with what advantages easily angles the think a heeling angle surface conditions, beam I the the At in depends sections one to hull would than sides equal 16), here of hull both diagram lies hydrodynamic flow at comparable ratios, The heeling in under value trapezium degrees (diagram condition current point sailing yachts value. balanced various flow heeling optimal suitable draws 30 an For from the the the advantage beam for any angle in x pressure resistance. The Bourneville Club played host to the first open radio-controlled six-metre Scotland and in the has retained a following once very popular, six-metre class, The yachts. Midlands, where yacht racing usually means in vane gear (or even Braine gear). Recently a body of opinion formed that these same yachts would prove to be very good radio yachts. So to test the temperature of the water, so to speak, Bill Green organised this little support models. gathering. Although interest in the event was promising, on the day was poor. Seven skippers turned up to share five the event was run as a because possible was sharing This match-racing series, The yachts (the traditional vane-racing method). represented a wide spectrum of design, and so were actually not best suited to match racing. Two were to Graham Bantock’s latest design Renaissance, 26.8 1b, 41-inch LWL, 1020 square inches. Bill Green’s yacht was very similar, a Sigma Six, a design which does not satisfy the new version of the rule. David Trippe brought along a shorter-waterline modern copy of a 1944 Alexander design, Glenrosa, a 24 1b model carrying a large spread of canvas. John Osborn’s arma is a sister to Roger Hatfield’s Dolphin, but heavier at 31.5 1b, carrying very was wind 920 square inches on a 43.3-inch waterline. Since the light and struggled to find its way through Bournville’s trees, the racing did not provide a sound standard of comparison. Any of the catch a breeze and pull out a twenty yard lead, only to might yachts lose it all again on the next under-canvassed for the leg of the course. Aarma was certainly wind. to radio Marblehead class this recommend to there is what So Sailors? Quite simply, an alternative. A six-metre is essentially a full displacement yacht; unlikely to plane except under extreme conditions, slower to manoeuvre and gain speed, but slower to lose it again. If that sounds dull, 1% dsnt. It’s a different kind of Sailing, requiring planning and anticipation rather than quick reactions. The six-metre rule offers the designer a wide scope of waterline, weight and sail area, but competitive yachts are likely to be quite similar in overall proportions. The yachts at this meeting probably of represent development as under wide a radio spread as one will see after a few years control. Development holds the key to the future. Development may breathe life into the class, but it could also mean death! The rating rule is in most respects identical to the full-size twelve metre rule. The cost of playing in that league is now too much for any individual to support. if the cost of a competitive “six” is too high it will be a non-starter. Worse still, if you need a new one every couple of years to stay in the game, we may see a once-a-year event for the professionals, but it will not gain the following in the clubs which it must The have six to may survive. well designs continue continue to turn be out, typical Marblehead. the class six and RESULTS OF THE Graham Bantock produced, radio more of but hope so! The first radio 6 metre regatta held at Bourneville had five boats entered, and was sailed as a match race series with seven skippers. At least one boat was not ready for that event, so an informal day’s sailing was arranged for November 1st and it duly appeared. So for that matter did eight new One-metre boats to four designs, and one Jet Services catamaran. Unfortunately the wind never did appear and the meeting closed at 2.30pm after only a couple of races. A good crowd of visitors had plenty of time to look at the boats, and the atmosphere was so good I have been asked to repeat the event next year!! 28 KINGFISHER MBC open 575 Regatta.
