MODEL YACHT RACING ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA ORGANIZED IN NEW YORK CITY, JULY 19, 1921 The objects of this Association is to encourage and promote the designing, building, and racing of model sailing yachts, and to establish uniform rules and regulations for the conduct of the sport. Model yacht clubs in the United States or possessions having a roster of not less than ten members are eligible for membership in the M. Y. R. A. A. Annual dues are ten dollars. Applications for membership shall be made in writing to the National Secretary, and shall be signed by the Commodore and Secretary of the applicant club, stating the number of members the applicant club has, and accompanied by a fee of ten dollars, as dues for the calendar year, to be returned if the application is rejected. Competitive classes of model yachts are: (1) The International A Class (abbreviated, A); (2) the Marblehead 50-800 Class, (abbreviated, M). A model yacht competing in any National Divisional, or Invitation Regatta must be registered in the M. Y. R. A. A. In each racing class, competitions NOT under sponsorship of the M. Y. R. A. A. or of a Division, may consist of Open or un-restricted races MODERN MODEL YACHTING etc. Of course every skipper does not himself design, but builds to plans of some accredited designer, who may be a prominent designer of full sized yachts, or one specializing in sailing models. Some models are built by “eye” or “rule of thumb” and in many instances this method produces fast, able boats. In some clubs models are sailed from skiffs, over a triangular course, with windward, leeward and reaching legs as in large yacht racing. The models perform in a manner that would be creditable to their larger sisters, and the skippers chasing them in a good breeze realize thoroughly that this game is not child’s play, and often the utmost limits of their strength is called upon to keep up with the models. In pond sailing the physical exertions of the contestants are somewhat reduced, as compared with skiff-sailing, but many miles are covered at a brisk walk during a day’s sailing. Lifting a heavy “A” boat, weighing up to 60 pounds, in and out of the water after each leg helps limber up pappy’s hardening arteries. Plenty of real exercise is obtained, and skippers and mates cheerfully endure hardships of all kinds, such as sloshing about in the rain and mud, or baking in the hot sun, carrying on, rain or shine, sometimes against heavy odds, and often suffering from cold or hunger rather than quit a race once started. It is no job for a “sissy,” this model yacht racing, and one must be on his toes continually to keep up with the Corinthians of this fascinating sport. So the models sail on, and on, in rain, fog, snow, sleet, and sunshine. It is one of the few sports where enthusiasm and interest is so high that even the elements do not discourage the carrying out of planned races. The only thing that can really stop a scheduled model yacht race is the absolute failure of the wind to materialize. ——— By the Editor The sport of model yachting is sometimes confused, by the uninitiated, with “kid stuff,” but modern model yachting is entirely removed from the embryonic stage where small boys and their grandpappys attempt to sail the ordinary homemade or commercial “toy boat” in the local mudpuddle or frog pond, and which are invariably poorly designed and turned out. It takes a certain amount of mental exertion to properly design a successful model yacht, and considerable time, patience and skill to build it according to the plan, and last, but most important, it takes stamina and self-restraint to. sail in competition or to win a race. The designer must have knowledge of the rules governing the class, which to the layman, would seem quite complicated. He must understand the fundamentals of naval architecture, and how to calculate displacement, centers of buoyancy and gravity, center of lateral resistance and position of sail plan, etc., aalicae iia 1939 JULY 2, 3, 4.
