Pleasant Cove Models produces model boat kits of traditional watercraft. We are not interested in square riggers, or war ships, there are plenty of companies producing kits of those. Instead we are focusing on American small watercraft, mostly of the late 1800’s to the present day. We are developing a line that will include working craft, such as dory’s, sharpies, Friendship sloops, Tancook schooners, as well as small yachts. Our first kit, introduced in early 1993 is a Sea Bird Yawl, a design first published in 1902 and widely built by amateur boat builders.
We expect to continue to develop kits, adding several each year.
Our kits are built, as much as scale permits, in exactly the same way the original boat was built. We hope this will appeal to those that might be planning to build the real boat. The model can be an excellent learning project.
Our kits are mostly aimed at novice to intermediate builders. All require some cutting and fitting, and include well detailed plans and instructions.

All require some cutting and fitting, and include well detailed plans and instructions. ‘ Kit Quality Our kits are composed of only first quality materials. Most major wood parts are of fine grain clear basswood. This cuts and sands well, holds a fine edge and takes most paints well. We use it for most structural parts, for planking, bulkheads, decks etc. where a paint finish is appropriate. For trim details, where a full size yacht might use mahogany or teak, we supply cherry or mahogany. Cherry is used because it finishes well and can be stained a fine dark tone. We are cautions with mahogany. Some of it has a very coarse, deep grain, which if viewed at the scale of our models, would be equivalent to gouges an inch or more deep- surely you wouldn’t use trim on a fine boat with gouges like that!. When we can get fine grained mahogany we use it. We wont even consider balsa or pine for our kits, although some of our competitors use it exclusively. Both have coarse grain, are nearly impossible to paint well, easily sand off all edges and generally ‘mush out’. Our fittings always use high quality model fittings, realistically cast or formed. We use brass or Britannia metal, not cheap ‘white metal’ or lead based castings. We put a lot of work into designing our kits, you are going to put many hours of your labor in. Is it worth saving a few dollars, to have cheap, inferior materials? We don’t think so. All our kits include detailed drawings and very complete written instructions. We explain each step, often with background information on how the similar part is built in the full size boat. In many cases we use sketches or illustrations, particularly where we want to highlight some detail that might be lost amid all the detail of a photo. And some times we use a photo, of the model or even of the full size craft. For some of our kits we even offer a set of color photos at extra cost. They aren’t needed to build the model, but if you are a real stickler for detail they may be just what you want. Time People often ask “How long will it take to build?” I think that’s the wrong question- it should be how long can I spend working on it. You really don’t need a model boat, what you buya kit for is the pleasure and relaxation you get from building it, and the satisfaction of displaying the finished model. So we don’t try to make our kits fast to build, rather we try to make them realistic and accurate, something you will be proud to display. But, since our kits are of relatively simple boats, at least when compared to the common models like CUTTY SARK or USS CONSTITUTION, they can typically be built in a few weeks of evening work. Skills Required Our kits are of wood construction. They require cutting, trimming, sanding and gluing. It does require some level of skill in using tools. We would not suggest them for a first ever project, or for children less than about 12, although a simple boat like the Good Little Skiff might be a nice project for a Parent -child joint project. Tools Required Only common modelers tools are needed. A simple hobby knife set , like one of the basic X-acto sets is needed. A sandpaper block, a few pins or paper clamps or clothespins and a couple small paint brushes would be enough. No power tools are needed, but of course, if you have them they can be used. 6 Sea Bird Yawl The Sea Bird Yawl was one of the first widely known boats designed for amateur construction. Thomas Fleming day, the editor of RUDDER magazine in 1902, had the SEA BIRD designed, built one, and sailed it widely, even to Europe. His writings in RUDDER made SEA BIRD the dream of many armchair sailors. Our SEA BIRD kit features precision Laser Cut parts. All major structural details are precision cut to tolerances of less than .002”. Your kit will fit together perfectly. This kit is taken from a 27’ design first drawn by Howard Chappelle, then re-drawn for more modern construction by Reuel B. Parker, and published in his book THE SHARPIE BOOK. This kit is 3/4” to the foot scale, making for a model of over 20” length. Large enough so that all construction details are done exactly as in the original boat. Every piece is included, so if you have considered building a Sharpie, this kit will show you exactly how to do it. Even to the round stern that makes Sharpies so beautiful We offer a set of 10 color photos of a New Haven Sharpie taken at Mystic Seaport. (Pete) Culler designed many small boats, and wrote several books describing them. He was a strong influence in the 1970’s revival of interest in wood boats, and small wood boats in particular. Among his more popular designs, the GOOD LITTLE SKIFF has beena first boat building project for many people. This kit is built in exactly the same manner as the real boat. A series of molds are erected on a strongback, chines and keel bent on, side planks applied and the bottom cross planked. The only difference is the size of the pieces- this kit is 1” to the foot scale. Another difference is lofting- the real boat requires first lofting the plans full size. We have supplied a full size printed set of patterns, so you simply use the full size patterns and start building. His most famous boat was the Egret, a 27’10” double ended sharpie. He wrote extensively of his adventures in Sharpies. Unfortunately, his original drawings were all lost in a 1926 hurricane, so we don’t have his exact plans. WOODENBOAT magazine researched old photos and notes, and reconstructed their best guess of Egret’s lines. They published several articles describing sharpie construction and sailing. This kit is modeled closely on the WOODENBOAT articles with some construction details from THE SHARPIE BOOK by Reuel Parker. Its built to 5/8” to the Foot scale, so it is large enough to include all construction detail. The cabin interior is detailed completely with two bunks and a galley area. Even the sharpest razor knife slightly compresses the wood at the edge. If you glue two edges together, the compressed edge shows a small depression. If you freehand cut edges they will always have slight wavers. Lay the piece on this jig and sand the edge to perfect straightness. If you make miters or angle cuts, the jig has an adjustable fence to hold parts, so all parts cut can be exactly duplicated. And if you make 90 degree parts, like door or hatch frames, the miters can be perfect because the jig has a 90 degree fence. The real ‘secret’ to our jig is that the sanding block is guided by the groves on the inside of the block, not by the sandpaper face. That way you get true guiding, and don’t wear away your jig. Sanding Jig LESS CREE RCC $12 RR U R ah. 15 Custom Machine Work Many serious model makers sometimes require custom machine shop work. Maybe they have a special jig or fixture to hold some parts. Or a special punch to stamp out metal or plastic parts. Maybe a master part, machined of brass, to be used as a pattern for investment castings of multiple parts. We have developed a well equipped shop to do just these tasks for our kits. We can, on a custom basis, do such work for any other modeler. Most large commercial machine shops can’t be bothered with such small, one of a kind jobs. Custom work can be expensive, after all, you are simply paying for time. But if its a part you can’t get elsewhere, we offer the service. Send us a detailed drawing, or at least a well made sketch, showing exactly what you need. Tell us how many parts, of what material, etc. We will supply a fixed price quote, and a time estimate. If you decide to have us make the parts, a 50% deposit is due with the order. We will bill you for the balance when we are ready to ship the parts, and will ship promptly on receipt of your payment. EERE EREEEEE ES a aE) 16 Sherline Miniature Machines Lathe, w/chucks.
