MINEOLA, NEW YORK Foreword We take pleasure in presenting our special tenth anni- versary catalog. Anticipating our most successful year, we have reduced prices considerably on many items. Our shop is located at Twelfth Street and Franklin Ave- nue, Garden City, Long Island, New York. Mail all orders to MODEL SHIP SUPPLY CO. MINEOLA, NEW YORK CONSTRUCTION SETS We wish to call your special attention to our construction sets. These sets are not a collection of machined parts, ready to be glued or nailed together, as it is not the aim of the Model Ship Supply Co. to deprive the model maker of the pleasure of “building his own.” The object of the set is to save the model maker the time and trouble of gathering the various items. With one of these sets the model maker is able to work right along without delay. All material is of the finest grade and a neat and accurate model jis assured. Each model has a list which enables one to see exactly what he iis getting. Such difficult parts as anchors, steering wheels, bitts, chocks and bell, etc., are included. You will also note that there is a finished parts list with most models. This is intended for those desiring to save time, and purchase as much of the finished items as possible, and have nothing but the best. All finished parts listed are made as close to scale as possible and will be found suitable for almost every ship model. Prices shown are f.o.b. Mineola. Be sure to enclose sufficient postage fee; any excessive amount will be returned. A deposit of 25% of the full amount must accompany your order if C.O.D. is requested. Please make your orders as clear as possible, using the enclosed order blank on the last page, or similar form. Prices effective March 1, 1936, subject to change without notice. A copy of this booklet will be sent anywhere postpaid upon receipt of 15 cents. We guarantee all merchandise as represented. Any purchase found unsatisfactory can be returned for exchange or refund. HULL MAKING Many have desired to build a fine ship model, but the fear of not making a good job of carving the hull discouraged them. However, strange as it may seem, the bread and butter method described below. makes the hull carving the simplest operation. Instead of carving the hull out of a solid block, the bread and butter method is employed as shown in Fig. A. You will note that there is a series of “lifts” or layers of different dimensions, each lift representing the shape of the hull at the given sections. In other words, it represents the hull cut into a number of slices. After all of the lifts have been glued together, it is a small job to eliminate the overhanging material and finish carving as shown at B. the lifts ready for gluing. All the construction sets contain The semi-finished hulls are already glued up and ready for final shaping. Special tools for hull carving are shown on pages 64 and 65. Fig. A A FEW VALUABLE HIN”S FOR DOING AWKWARD JOBS DRIVING NAILS THROUGH THIN WOOD STRIPS Many model makers have become discouraged in attempting to drive nails into small thin strips without splitting. By using a small “C” clamp or vise as shown, one can drive any number of nails with but little worry. Always use a light hammer. This will keep small nails or pins from bending. HOW TO MOUNT RAIL STANCHIONS In many models small glass beads have been substituted for rail stanchions. Although if small enough, they do not appear very clusmy. The brass stanchion pin shown on page 58 is far more effective and simpler to mount. The reason is that both ends or “shanks” are same size in diameter, and the model maker can clamp his rail in position and drill small holes through the deck in one operation. Then unclamp the rail and place all the stanchions into the deck, putting a drop of glue on each “shank” before pressing them down. The same method is followed for the rail, after the pins are tight into the deck. With a little care the result will be a very neat job. BELAYING RIGGING LINES The model maker often encounters difficulty in getting the loops around the belaying pins. A simple method of overcoming this difficulty is to take a piece of wire about 1%” in diameter and eight inches long. Grind or file down to the size of an ordinary pin for a distance of 144”, then form a small eye at the end. Make a fair size hook on the other end that will enable you to take a firm hold. By threading the end of the thread through the eye, then holding the end in one hand so as to keep it taut, and the wire in the other, it is possible, working from the opposite side of the model to belay the ends around the belaying pins in the form of a figure eight. After clipping the line, a drop of shellac will prevent it from coming free. 5 RIGGING To the left is an illus- Clove-Hitches. tration of the rigging on a real ship. Putting the ratlines on a model is one of the few tedious jobs and care must be taken to keep them straight and uni- form. There are several methods to “rattle down.” About as good and simple as any is to take a spool of 24 black cotton and thread a needle with a piece about 12” long. Fasten it to the forward shroud; then run in and out of each succeeding one and fasten to the aft shroud. Be careful not to pull the thread too tight. After all the ratlines are in place go over them all with a thin coat of shellac. Do not clip the ends too close to the shrouds before shellacing. THE VALUE OF CELLULOID IN MODEL MAKING Flat celluloid is invaluable in making mast caps, top cross- trees, dolphin strikers, etc., as numerous holes or slots can be put in a small piece without splitting or breaking. The round cellluloid is also useful for making deadeyes, but the greatest advantage of this material is the making of rails. In the event that thin strips of wood are used, bending by steaming is necessary, and a lot of patience is required. Rattan is a fairly good substitute, but the finish is not as clean looking as celluloid. With celluloid strips say %” square, the desired shape can be had without trouble and the numerous holes for stanchions can be drilled without any fear of splitting. A list of celluloid pieces to cover practically all require- ments will be found on page 55. 6 THREE PLY VENEER Three-ply veneer is really essential in shi p model making. Due to its toughness it is especially desirable for bulwarks, stern boards, decks, centerboards, ete. Another advantage is the fact that it is waterproof. Four thicknesses are carried in stock, namely: 1-16”, %”, 3-16” and 4”. Information as to prices and sizes obtain able will be found on page 55. The 1-16” size can be cut across or wit h the grain with an ordinary pair of shears. MATERIALS FOR MASTS AND YARDS We have what is known as sets of masts and yar d materials for all models shown. These sets contain selected birch dowels 18 in. long in % in., 8-16 in., 4 in., 5-16 in. an d 3% in. diameters, Very few hardware or wood shops carry dow els smaller than ALae therefore these masts and yard sets save consid erable time as the topmasts and upper yards are quite small in diameter. TAPERING MASTS AND YARDS For those having a lathe this operation is a simple one. Without the use of a lathe, however, one of the best methods is to place an ordinary plane upside down and hold between the knees with the cutting edge away from you. Next, draw the piece along the bottom and keep turning sli ghtly until the desired size and taper is obtained. RIGGING LINE No model can hope to look neat and carefully mad e if a cheap grade of cord is used. All our rigging line sets are supplied in three sizes of the finest grade of Iri sh linen cord, which are not affected by weather conditions. FRIGATE “CONSTITUTION” Every true American has an affectionate interest in “Old Ironsides”—the ship which for more than 100 years has carried the flag to victory and has been reconditioned by public subscription because she represents the indomitable spirit of the Navy. This volume, by “one of the world’s leading authorities on ship models,” tells how, without previous training, anyone can make a simplified or exhaustively particular, scale model of this ship. The ample description of everything required, from tools and material to the finished model, aided by full sized plans and more than 10v specially made illustrations from original contemporary sources and the latest reconstruction plans, correct and complete ix itself from start to finish, see page 53. 22 Few ship models have so large a host of admirers ag “Old Ironsides,” which happens to make one of the most decorative and interesting models. There is much pleasure to be derived from building her. The Model Ship Supply Co. has brought out a Seacraft Constitution Construction Set. All parts correspond with the book and blue prints, which makes this set extremely valuable. All the necessary lifts have been cut close to shape and are ofi the proper thickness. BE. A. McCann Length 28” long by 2144” high “TRUE SANTA MARIA” The above model is known as the “True Santa Maria” and is undoubtedly closer to Columbus’s Flagship than any model previously shown. It is the belief of Capt. McCann, the world- famous authority on ship models, that the models previously shown represent a vessel perhaps 100 or more years later than the one in which Columbus discovered America. Popular Science Monthly ran a series of articles on building this “True Santa Maria,” starting with the December 1927 issue. Capt. McCann, whose numerous ship model articles in the past have been so helpful to the model maker, has endeavored to make the “True Santa Maria” one of the finest models. Full instructions as well as sketches for all the necessary parts appeared in each issue. Reprints for those desiring the special instruction for building this model are obtainable for 25 cents. 24 The desire to build a good ship model is gaining daily and in order to assist the model maker in securing the proper ma- terial with which to build an exact replica of the “Real Santa Maria,” the Model Ship Supply Company has brought out a special construction set containing all the necessary materials of the finest and most suitable grades. All the heavy cutting has been done and the reader is spared the tiresome job of hunting around to buy the proper materials. Thus a correct model is assured. The following list of the numerous items contained in this set gives some idea of the value offered: For the Hull, all the lifts are of the proper thickness and cut fairly close to shape. E. A. McCann “MAYFLOWER” It is hardly necessary to say what the above represents, but for those whose history is a bit foggy we wish to refresh their memory and advise that the “Mayflower” was the famous ship that brought the Pilgrims over to the new world in 1620, landing at Plymouth, Mass. Interest has been very high and requests for instructions so numerous that Capt. McCann wrote a series of articles for Popular Science Monthly, which started in the April 1928 issue and is without doubt the most complete he has written. All the various details and instructions are contained and the novice will find no difficulty in working from them. The complete model is about 25” long and 20” high. Those desiring special instructions, can obtain reprints for 25 cts. 26 Ship model making has caused just one little annoyance to the model maker, and that has been the time consumed in gathering the proper sizes and quantity of materials (which is absolutely essential if you wish to have a real fine model). The Model Ship Supply Co. have solved this, however, by supplying a construction set enabling the model maker to work night along and build a real model of the “Mayflower” without any delay. Everything contained in this set is strictly to specifications. The list of items follows, All the “lifts” for the hull are of proper thickness and cut close to shape. Suitable materials for uprights, decks, hatches, lifeboat, capstan, guns, gun carriages, keel, stem, sternpost, rudder, cutwater, knights, crosstrees, timberheads, handrails, pinrails, ladders, channels, sternboards, bulwarks, gratings, headboards, bulkheads, oak stand, etc. Also selected dowels for masts and yards, sail cloth, finest grade of various sizes rigging lines (all Irish linen) thin thread, silk flags, beads, special wood for blocks and dead eyes, cast metal anchors and bell and assortment of nails, pins, wire and glue. From the above list one can see the time saved in purchasing one of these special construction sets.
