The Model Craftsman: Volume 9, Issue 10 – March 1941

  • Solving The Trophy Problem. By Dr. I. W. Houk.
    • The Problem: The Seattle Model Yacht Club faced limited funds and a lack of trophy diversity, as a few skippers (Mr. Simpson and Mr. Clark) dominated A-class and 50/800-class awards.
    • Sourcing: Second-hand silver and pewter cups, goblets, and sugar bowls were purchased cheaply and restored using polishing wheels.
    • Custom Bases: Bases were turned from kiln-dried Eastern maple on lathes and attached by undercutting the wood to friction-fit the cup bottoms.
    • “Engraving”: Letters were burned into the wooden bases using a surgical electro-cautery needle, then rubbed with white lead for a rustic finish.

The Seattle Model Yacht Club was however, faced by considerable limitation of funds. One of us found a of silver and pewter cups, goblets, and sugar bowls in a second hand store and purchased tip cup and two aluminum handles attached. A wooden bound copy of Here are some of the gag trophies as described in this article by Dr. Houk. You can easily imagine the fun of awarding or receiving one of these trophies. They’re equally fitting, too, for miniature car races, powerboat contests and other sports. Some of the cups were badly bent and cor- roded. After carefully rernoving the dents in the cups, they were introduced to a polishing wheel with plenty of polishing compound. A piece of kiln-dried Eastern maple, 2” thick, was selected. One surface was smoothed. Circles of suitable size were drawn on it with a compass and cut out with a band saw. These were then turned over to two members of the club who owned lathes, and bases were turned out in harmony with the designs of the cups. Retention of the cups to the bases was done by undercutting the top edges of the bases slightly, and gently tapping the bottom edges of the cups into the undercuts. To save on engraving, one of us used his surgical electro-cautery outfit with an electric needle and burned the letters on the bases. varnished. The cover was made of plywood. Leather, held in place with upholstery tacks, provided hinges. The printing for these ribbons was first carved on linoleum blocks with the words ‘“A-class,” “30-800 class,” “First,” “Second,” etc., interchangeable. The bases of the linoleum blocks were grooved so that they could fit into an improvised printer’s stick. Ordinary printers’ ink was then placed on a piece of glass, rolled out flat with a small roller, the ink trans- ferred to the linoleum blocks from the roller, and the done with direct pressure on the ribbons.
