- Plank-On-Frame Construction for Model Yachts. By. C. H. Farley.
- Details the plank-on-frame method for model yacht construction, describing it as a modern, accurate system that creates a lightweight, watertight hull. He provided instructions for constructing the backbone using laminated wood, fastening planks with toothpicks and adhesive, and achieving proper alignment [1].

Screws may be used to fasten planks to frames also, although toothpicks are just as satisfactory. Further, series of several articles on the subject by Mr. Farley, a nationally recognized authwrity.) PRELIMINARY REMARKS T HE plank-on-frame method of constructing model yachts all plank-edges coated are with adhesive, so that the entire hull, backbone, frames, and planking are a closely knit unit. Celluloid cement or Ambroid is the most convenient adhesive for use in sealing plank-edges, adhesives do and not neither of necessitate these perfect The best stock for the backbone is straight, close-grained pine or mahogany. Freedom from warping or twist will be assured if, instead of a solid piece of wood, TWO pieces are glued together with water-proof glue. Don’t use celluloid cement or similar adhesives for this kind of work. The glue-joint between the two pieces will provide a permanent center-line, and the two layers re-enforce one another and make a stronger member than a single piece of wood. is the most modern, simple, and accurate in use. Prepare a dozen small wedges of soft wood, each two or three inches long, and place them between the batten and plankedge, pushing wedges in just enough to it advisable to use one continuous piece. A good width for backbone for any size model, from an M Class up, is one inch. This means, two one-half inch pieces of stock glued together. Accurate lining up of the whole backbone and keel-appendage, also the skeg, is simple if the width is kept equal, say one inch. When checking the assembly, it can be laid on a flat surface, fastened together with screws, turned over and re-checked, and any twist, rock, or irregularity detected and corrected. All of these proved very interesting to the srowds attending, and no doubt they made several converts to the hobby. An occurrence, which may be of interest to Mr. Robert Ripley of Believe-it-or-Not fame, was the theft of a tiny race car from the exhibit of the Haines Hobby Shop, Reading, Pa. The day following the theft, the car minwas mysteriously returned by mail. The iature jalop was the property of Del Reinhold other operations, as such information will be found in books already published. If not shown on the plan, a base or (Continued from page 33) If the middle portion of the backbone requires more width than the forward and after parts, the required amount of stock may be glued on either side AFTER the assembly is lined up on a flat surface as described. Or, if it re- quires LESS width, this may be worked off after lining up. This method obviates the usual one by which lining up is attempted, more often unsuccessfully, by using a taut cord or line and sighting the longitudinal center-line of the backbone. The distance between frames may vary according to the spacing which the designer employed, but any distance from the face of the building-board. Draw a straight line from the stem, about one inch above the same, clear across the plan to the end of the transom, or stern, and parallel to a water line, preferably the load-water-line. (Continued on page 69) BACKBONE and KEEL APPENDAGE (See Figs, 1-2-3-4) The backbone is sometimes called the “keel,” but the latter term is confusing, as the fin is sometimes termed the “lead keel.’ “Backbone’’ will be used to indicate the complete main member to which the frames are attached. For the latter process, which is recommended, fold paper carefully to make center-line, making sure top edge is an exact right angle. Test each folded paper for squareness of top edge and ctnter-line before proceeding. By laying straight, a heavy jack-plane object, or exactly other on the base-line, the top edge of the paper may be kept exactly straight while tracing. Trace shape of section, making sure the center-line is accurate. Also include buttock, water-lines, sheer-line, frame mor- tises and clamp or inwale notches. Fold pattern and cut out with scissors. When opened out, both sides will be exactly the same. Fold paper together and prick through both “pages,” then duplicate the lines already drawn on original half of pattern. Check pattern carefully on the plan, and correct any irregularity. Fine sandpaper wrapped around a small block may be used to fair the edge of paper to eliminate any flats or bumps caused by scissors. It will be necessary to allow for the thickness of the planking, so take a pair of bow-dividers and set to the thickriess of the planking to be used. Mark pat- tern all around outside edges, but NOT the top, or base-line edge. Trim this excess paper off, Now mark in the inside finished line of the frames. Usually about % of an inch is sufficient transverse thickness. Re-check patterns on the plan. They will now be a little smaller, according to the thickness of the planking just trimmed off the pattern, and all edges except the base-line edge should be ex- actly parallel to the full-sized sections on the body plan. The paper-work is now finished, and we are ready to transfer the patterns to the stock preparatory to sawing out and shaping.
