  • Has Model Yachting “Gone With the Wind”?. By T. W. Houk
  • Houk argues against the prevailing pessimistic view that model yachting would decline during the war. Houk contends that the war would actually lead to a boom in the sport, citing government promotion of physical fitness and outdoor activities, increased park usage due to transportation limitations, and the sport’s appeal to groups facing financial constraints.
at MODEL YACHTING EDITED BY R. P. DEZENDORF HAS MODEL YACHTING “GONE WITH THE WIND”? By THEODORE W. HOUK ODEL yachtsmen everywhere have been gloomily prophesying a decline in model yachting since the start of the war. But a more optimistic viewpoint develops when one analyizes the situation. The war should bring a relative boom in model yachting. Already Uncle Sam is actively encouraging minor sports that draw many participants and few 3pectators. Physical fitness is being stressed as a patriotic duty, and outdoor activities such as model yacht racing are being emphasized. The spirit of “Carry on!” in civilian recreation has kept British countries at a state of high morale, and that spirit is rapidly spreading in America. Problems in civilian auto- mobile transportation will naturally increase city park and playground activ- ities as Sunday-driving diminishes. Since “hard times” mean good times for inexpensive hobby activities, the re- turn of large specialized groups in civil- ian and military life to relative poverty will encourage model yachting in these groups. Special regattas for soldiers and sailors on leave are already being planned by many clubs, in cooperation with military recreational organizations, are being constantly received from nations already at war. Typical of the attitude of gloom that has been affecting model yachtsmen are the laments of two outstanding skippers: “Guess it will be a tough year for the little ships!” “Tt looks at present as if for quite some time the sport of model yachting is definitely out!” For several issues, MopEL CRAFTSMAN had been devoid of yachting articles.Even the perenial “Crow’s Nest”, mimeo graphed _ publication of Warinanco kept actively interested by more wide- M.Y.C., Inc., was behind scheduie. Military restriction of sailing waters for large yachts will cause many major yachtsmen to turn to miniature yachting. Discouraged club members with old and inferior model yachts are being spread use of handicap systems of racing. A new class, the Two-Meter is being widely boosted te stimulate new efforts in designing and building. Club secretaries the press, to elevate the morale of gloomy model yachtsmen throughout the country. Although building activities face a slump due to priorities on metals, yacht fans are entering cheerfully into the nation-wide game of discovering substitute materials. Skiff sailing develops the muscles ber as an owl’s. Medical science rec- ognizes the benefits of model yachting. Dr. Thewlis in his recent book, “Care of the Aged”, mentions model yacht building as an adjunct in the prevention of ist early old age. To the indoor hobbyway or craftsman: There is no better to tie your hobby into this nation wide campaign of physical fitness than to build a model racing yacht, and SAIL it—often. With rationing of tires and gasoline, a return to park strolling will be greatly sncreased. The week-end-tourist will become a trolley-strap-hanger, and head for the nearest city park. Naturally, the moving white sails will attract him and a new devotee to the sport will be born. True Sweetster, new Commodore of Berkeley M.Y.C. writes, “For your information, we (the model yachtsmen) are going to play a very important part in civilian morale when gas and tires get scarce.” Se Watch your pondside spectator crowds for new faces, especially for faces that light up with interest at the sight of trim tiny yachts realistically ploughing the waves. The 1942 Season It has often been said that racing miniature yachts is a “Depression sport”. Model yachting grew rapidly with the last depression to reach its zenith in 1936 to 1938. In recent years, with money freely circulating, a distinct falling-off was noticed, in number of entries at races, yachts registered, and clubs affiliated with the Model Yacht Racing Association of America. War times breed depression of a different sort, and create special depression groups. The soldiers will have just as much fun sailing your venerable beauties as you did in 1936, and, incidentally, you will give the sport a big boost, because some of the boys will go back to Pendleton and Peoria after “it is over” and start model yacht clubs of their own. The local papers will give you good publicity because of the patriotic angle. Further, the good you will create with Army officials may be just the factor that will induce them to place their shore defenses in a neighboring golf course instead of, for example, in the middle of _ your drained and filled model yacht basin. The idea of boosting Model Yachting with regattas for service men is meeting with universal favor, and plans are al- ready under way in several areas to hold such meets.
