Many newcomers are uncertain of the exact status of the rule, and others have asked the editor to explain WHY the Technical Committee decided to put forward certain parts of its rule. So I spoke to Jan Dejmo, the chairman of the Tech Committee to ask HIM to answer these questions. First the status of the rule; The IYRU-MYRD rule was formulated as a total rule and published as far back as June 1988, and has NOT been modified since Jan 1989 in any respect!!! Member countries are free to adopt it if they wish, or ignore it. Any international events which might be held for the class would use the full rule, but member countries can modify parts of the rule to suit their country if they deem it neccessary to encourage more model yachts to go sailing. The English MYA have explained their stance in a full page in this issue of MYN, and clarified their position. Now the most common queries on the details of Rule 3.2.1.2 No pigment in the resin the rules; lay-up, or internal painting. This follows from the rule which stops the use of certain ‘hi-tech’ materials in the hull construction, and is neccessary to allow a measurer to SEE if any wrong material has been used. It is not a device to stop home building, because the total all up weight of the boat is high enough to allow a solid gel coat with plenty of pigment to give a good colour, without penalising the builder or sailor. Rule 3.3.1.1. and 3.4.1. No restrictions on Fin and Rudder materials. This was carefully considered by the TC, and on balance it came to the conclusion that the inspection of these items in the event of a protest would be so difficult as strenghening. discretion, sections. object to The and It is to outweigh full this size was worth the practice thought made hulls, This rule was in the original was corrected Measurement The in text. the You banning to be quite my make foils’ material 1989 print but check of a Carbon holes, problem that when so Fibre at with it the model seems many or similar measurer’s size foil illogical boats rely ‘ to on particularly SAILS!! allowed. text, can bore enquirers sails and fittings, Unwoven sail published of is to made Rule 3.9.1.3. first to pointing out ‘professionally ‘professionally’ benefits was this the omitted as a clerical from the rule, issued number to all error from the sequence. Ask one is like your national Why are there THREE rules in the world? the M authority class one, and has been for one. The reason why the IYRU-MYRD rule is not the same as the American or Naviga versions is not the subject of this text, and all I will say on this is that after some pressure the original rule, prepared solely on the grounds of technical excellence by the members of the TC, was modified to try to allow the hulls of all three types to intermix. This is by no means a perfect solution, but does mean that anyone buying a Graupner Miramare, the only One Metre kit distributed worldwide by a MAJOR company, will be able to join in a local fleet and then alter its sails if the owner feels the extra expense justified. Thus a Club District League hosting Committee events they a District Championship instructs and have control some since District over 8 must these run it as Committees too. the select 1W83b7 a ae c] i a bead eW8AEptOrKuaD?71 Ne genom|os fem] & ; se 2 = S97 3 a 3ON8 YNI 1XI$310) =r 04 yuem nok 41 pay}Fwo aq ued YOTYM ynq ‘UOTITPE4, YS}TJg Oy} UT yeu peddeys Lew,Aadot 4) JAIN30 tA eongseun O = t[Fa=mZ]z EAST COAST EAST COAST Since 12 METER - the appearance 12 by Rod Carr of the EC/12 with the vane controlled CuRRENT — U.S. worked long into the night to produce a prototype unit in time for testing at a local club regatta. The unit was powered by a pair of 1200 mah battery packs, and the vane was set up to require approximately 5 degrees of wind direction variation before the winch would cause the winch to run. American experience with commonly available swing arm sail control units has shown that a single 1200 mah pack can provide sail trimming for a typical days racing of 14 to 18 races. Joel reports that the conditions sailed in the test were light air and quite shifty. He said that the unit worked excellently and that there appeared to be a substantial improvement over manual trimming of the rig. However, as in every other aspect of sailing that one explores, there was a definite tradeoff for having such sail trimming excellence ------ after two races, both battery packs were dead flat. The unit apparently did keep the sails trimmed well, and in so doing adjusted them almost constantly. In checking with engineers of my acquaintence, I relearned something that was pointed out in my college physics course. I.e., the starting current for an electric motor is substantially higher, than the steady state current required to run the motor at a constant speed. Starting currents can account for the majority of the electricity consumed, if the motor is shut off shortly after reaching its design rpm. Since the vane is causing the motor to run in very short bursts, and may even be trying to reverse the motor while the armature is still coasting, it is no wonder that the batteriés were quickly drained. Anyone out there got a suggestion for a very small 4.8 volt electric clock that we could put in the line between the winch and the battery? For years I have wondered just how many minutes the winch runs in a 15 minute race. Do the better skippers "winch" more, or do the beginners use up batteries faster searching for sail trim. Please let me o TIME (SEC.) 2 know if you have a suggestion. I have just received word that the IYRU-MYRD IEC/12 Master Mold has been completed, and that Daughter Plugs will be momentarily available. Please contact me directly for Daughter Plug information and a delivery schedule. Rod Carr, 3011 - 177th Ave. NE, 10 Redmond, WA 98052 U.S.A. MotroR RPM —> sail control unit in a recent MYN there has been a construction article published in the United States giving wiring and rigging diagrams. Captivated by the anticipation of a sail trimming system which would continually maximize the thrust available from the sail plan, Joel Neshkin and Irl Whitten of Birmingham, Alabama in the MULTIHULLS “SAIL SPEED – BREST 90″ We have only a short report from France on the ‘SAIL SPEED – BREST 90″ event, in which fifteen entries battled a wind of up to 30kts, which was steady enough to give superb sailing conditions for what are essentially speed machines. Four competitors fought for first place, bringing down the previous top time for the 50 metre course set at Autun 87 at 14 secs, to bring it under 10 secs for the first time. Raymond Corrigou with his tried and trusty NRJ3 finally set the record at 9.89 secs, ahead of another Tri sailed by m.Sevellec with the first of his two entries, a 2m long boat weighing 5 kilos. The top catamaran placed third, a Jet Services to 1/10 scale equipped with swing rig, after leading the field in the earlier rounds, only to have to reduce sail area more than the Tri’s at the last round. The fourth boat to beat the old record was the second Trimaran of M. Sevellec. Ecume d’Etang, the other Corrigou boat with wind surf style rig and cantilevered floats, broke a mast and retired, in what should have been ideal conditions. The first two boats also placed in reverse order at the early season five hour event at Angers, and still set a performance standard as well built boats of simple concept. WITTON LAKE REGATTA. This indicates that with a light wind the deciding factors are a good rig with a set of superb sails and well functioning fittings, not weight. RIG Construction. There are significant differences in the construction of rigs between the world champion’s boat and the runner-up’s boat. Walicki sails a rig with a rotating mast and an additional double luff sail. If the class is to continue to hold the level of interest it had in the past, then new designers must be encouraged to publish their ideas, and thus have them built. By this I mean readers should encourage new faces to submit their work for publication and not rely indefinitely on the names such as Bantock, Dicks, Hollom, Lewis, Stollery and Sykes who have given so much time in the past to provide the lines of the majority of the UK fleet. I am sure they will continue to put out new work, as their work schedule permits, but does the class hold no appeal for younger designers? INTERNATIONAL AC CLASS Cory Johnson, the driving force behind the new class rule in the USA, has passed on some more information on the boats and rule, and we are pleased to offer you his comments as follows; My new International had hoped the it AC would be. surfers when I class It sail yacht, is large, it off AC/US 1 Full beautiful, Tilt fast, Boogie, is everything I and scares the hell the California coast. The graphics on out of the hull, wrapping around the bottom and onto the keel, were done by painter Stuart Saulnier, who has paintings hanging in the White Houseand in Moscow. The transom also features a cameo by Daniel Emery, a renowned jewellery artist. This class, and particularly my personal boat, has attracted a gathering of some very interesting and talented people. The AC class is rapidly gaining great respect, we currently have over 30 boats building and several already sailing, mostly Stateside but some overseas. We no longer need to push the class, it has developed its own momentum. I would like to clarify an oversight regarding Cadsail’s advert; at the stated price of hulls we cannot keep our head above water, and the intention of the original price was simply to ‘launch’ the class [I just love puns] Hulls currently cost $200.00 which approaches their true value, plus shipping, plans still cost $5.00, and plans shipped Overseas cost $8.00. Orders for plans should be directed to me, If you write, and orders for hulls should be directed to John Amen. please include your phone number. Some have questioned my authority to use the word ‘International’ with the AC class. My answer was immediate; I have deemed it so. in conjunction I have created something which i have given freely to everyone who wishes to embrace it, regardless of nationality or affiliation. At least it’s over with, and we can get back to racing. I certainly hope that America will prevail in May of 1992, the scheduled date for the next Cup race. However, I feel that the American syndicates have been rather whimpy with their lack of commitment to building boats. By contrast boats were launched this spring in Japan, Italy, France, Russia, and Denmark. They are sailing and shaking out the problems before the Americans have even committed to a boat.
