- Plank-On-Frame Construction For Model Yachts, Part 6. By C. H. Farley.
- Sealing the hull and planking.
- Self-Tacking Vane. Edited by R. P. Dezendorf.
- History & Development: The first successful self-tacking vane was completed on January 23, 1941.
- Mechanical Function: Unlike manual vanes, this gear uses a linked system where the feather and counter-balance swing simultaneously to leeward via wind and gravity. This allows the yacht to be turned with a pole without the skipper needing to kneel or stop the boat to reset the vane manually.
- Pond-Side Control: The design features a slotted arm and adjustable pin that allows for a “ready, single-adjustment” of the vane angle at the water’s edge.
- Limitations: Despite its success, the article notes that early versions were difficult to balance mathematically at all angles and occasionally failed to “come about” if the counter-balance link was at an extreme angle.

The device was abandoned in favor of the Berge Vane after the race was half over. This model was a modified Berge Vane, the vane tiller slot of which was formed by two adjustable arms that could be set close together for running, and at a wide angle for beating. The counter-balance was mounted on the tiller of the rudder. The gear was discarded because a variable counter-balance factor encountered at maximum tiller excursion, occasionally caused accidental locking of the device with resultant fixed inclination of the rudder to leeward. In 1940, Charles Simpson suggested to the writer that a self-tacking vane might be linked in some manner with a counterbalance mounted on the vane assembly. In co-operation with Earl Peterson, Secretary of Seattle M.Y.C., the first successful self-tacking vane was completed by the writer and used, January 23, 1941. (See Fig. 2) With this vane the feather was mounted on a pintle (3) on top of the vane spindle shaft (9). Continued on page 57) tion bar (1) extended forward from the vane spindle shaft and on its free end was mounted a pintle (2) for the SELF-TACKING VANE FIG. | counter-balance assembly. By means of a slotted arm (6) extending forward from the feather, and linking with an adjustable pin on the end of an arm (7) extending aft from the counter-balance, the feather and counter-balance were both made to swing simultaneously to leeward, by force of wind and gravity, each time the boat was put about. The counter-balance link arm pin was adjusted by means of a nut (4), giving a ready, single-adjustment pond-side control of vane angle. A guying lock (5) which swung upward from the friction bar would lock the feather and counterbalance arms in a straight line. The friction bar could then be swung around to any desired angle for reaching or running. The guying lock could also be raised when these arms were off center, thus keeping the feather to one side for guying. Since yachts so equipped could be turned with a pole without touching the vane, one was saved not only the in- convenience and discomfort of kneeling each time the boat was tacked, but was also saved the loss of momentum occa- sioned from the required stopping of the yacht whenever the old type vane was put over by hand. He tells us the main units are made entirely of wood while the smaller fixtures and accessories are fashioned from brass and copper. The wheels are built up of separate hubs, spokes and felloes the same as the prototype, and the water gauge was made from a thermometer tube which happened to be in correct scale. Steam gauges are of wood with paper faces, and the large pipes are ¥4” copper tubing. Hand wheels and valves are snap fasteners. Play pipes, axles, light, lantern, braces, relief valve and whistle are made from brass. The large suction hose is 2” air line with brass couplings which are threaded so that the pieces connect. The model is 13” long, 9” high and 642” wide. Mr. Seip, a member of the pressroom crew at the Hughes plant where Model Craftsman is printed, built the fire engine model during spare time over a period of more than two months. Photos were taken by Stanley Ebert. By using two counter-balance weights, one soldered in a fixed position as a marker, and the other movable, the combined influence of the weighted tiller for either constant lee or weather rudder inclination may be employed at will. Operation of the counter-balance-compensating type is identical with the type in Fig. 2 except that no adjustment of the counterbalance is necessary. One by-product of the self-tacking vane not realized at first is itS surprising automatic ability to counteract pitching. To solve the problem of the single-swivel self-tacking vane a more positive fixation of the feather at its maximum excursion angle must be obtained. The model built weighed only 4 ounces. The challenge of the light weight, single swivel, counter - balance - compensating, self-tacking vane should stimulate the inventive genius of model yachtsmen throughout the country. (To be continued in the next issue, including Figures 2 and 3.) THE SAFETY VALVE so the component of this action resolves itself into self-tacking vane overcomes (Continued from page 45) a straight line, accurately controlled by vane angle. In a good breeze with comparatively small waves, or on smooth water, the automatic pitching and tossing control feature has not been observed, so there is no increased rudder drag due to this action. It occurs only in the sloppy waves that follow a sudden comparative calm, the condition under which this action is desirable. The gear boat bore off on the opposite tack, still toward the finish line. Later, after a disadvantageous guy, the vane equipped boat would head for the side lines. With the self-tacking vane, when a_ sudden gust strikes the opposite side of the yacht, the vane tips over to the side needed and the boat continues toward the finish line, her momentum unaffected. In going to windward in a quartering wind it is sometimes desirabe to point higher on the long leg and bear off to foot faster on the short leg. To obtain this effect simply set the friction bar off center of the vane tiller at the desired angle. This adjustment may be made in a split second while racing or in anticipation at the start of a board. One experimental model built and later discarded had feather, counter-balance and vane spindle all on one swivel. It was tested under the unusual condition of strong, variable, shifting winds. Since with this type, the feather was held in the chief disadvantage of the old type vanes in variable shifting winds. With the old type vane, a sudden shift of the wind to the opposite side of the yacht left her temporarily in irons while the Braine ders as we read copy on this one, Bob Dunkly of the Westchester, N.
