The Model Craftsman: Volume 7, Issue 9 – February 1939

  • News of The Clubs. By C. O. Brook.
    • Brook reported on competitive model yachting and introduced aerodynamic principles to sail design. It highlighted a technical report applying wind-tunnel data to explain pressure and suction on sails and the impact of mast interference. The column also featured updates from model yacht clubs, radical new boat designs, and racing results from events like the National Sportsman’s Show

We have some beautiful models and their per- formance is excellent, Among the 10-800 models, we boast of are, Zip, Wampum II, Blue Fin, Squanto II, and High Hat, designed by one of our own members, Fred Arens, Leon- ard Street, Agawam, Mass. The names given above represent but half our roster of yachts. This winter members are going to be busy constructing class-A models. We are not, at the time this is writ- ten, certain, whether or not all mem- bers will build in this class, as it is quite difficult to transport the yachts. However, a number of men have already started work on “A” boats. Later in the season we may have some interesting news on the progress of these models. The attachment is a means, espe- cially designed to make skiff sailing more simple so far as making adjustments are concerned while under way. By this hook-up there are but two sheets used, the jib and main, and the lock. Further time can be saved by run- ning the jib-sheet through the mast and attaching it to the main-sheet bowser, but in this case the bowser must move aft toward the clew out- haul; with the jib sheet also attached to the bowser on the jib club, any adjustment can sired, be made that is de- the primary thought being water, and scow on deck. So far it has been very tricky to sail, to adjust the jib to main at their best relative position, and then, simply hauling on the main sheet also hauls the jib into place. This means but two operations to lock the rudder and set the sails for beating, and unlocking the rudder and setting the sails for running or reaching. The beating sheet is never detached but remains hooked up at all times. When the “jockey” slides over to either side, the pressure caused by the pull on the sail, operates the Braine Gear, except when locked, when the gear is inactive as in beating. The nearer to the center of the gear the hooks are placed the greater amount of rudder is obtained. This is because the forward edge of the steering gear being curved, and the elbow quadrant being straight, greater leverage is obtained as the hooks are moved toward the center. ¥% While the gear may seem difficult to make, it is very simple to construct from the regular hawse, and makes for a cleaner deck arrangement.
