Drill six 3/32” air models must use a weighed rudder since that was the first means of controlling the helm, and any other device takes an unfair advantage of the skipper who wants to use this elementary means of controlling his model. The argument that the use of a sliding rig and vane gives a great advantage is merely hearsay evidence not substantiated by fact. Let us look at the record for this year: Washington Invitation Regatta at Wash- ington won by yacht fitted with Braine Gear. Ross Cup Regatta at Warinanco won by yacht fitted with Braine Gear. Regatta Invitation Montclair at Verona won by yacht fitted with Braine Gear. Marblehead Cup Regatta at Atlantic won by yacht fitted with Braine Gear. In all of these regattas, models equipped with sliding rigs and vanes have sailed, or would have sailed, if conditions for their use had been favorable. The National M class championship at Boston in 1939 was won by a_ yacht equipped with a sliding rig and vane by the remarkable margin of one point after three days of sailing,—certainly not a conclusive evidence of any marked superiority! Experienced model yacht designers and skippers in this country and abroad, after trying the vane gear and not of convinced the the Braine gear, and age sailing the sliding rig, superiority state that Braine are over for aver- gear is more reliable. In any case, the boiler should be lagged with asbestos. If you decide to cover the asbestos with a sheet iron or brass casing, it would be well to fit now. The holes for the boiler fittings can be drilled thru the end casing, then thru the boiler shell. An easier way would be to put the screws near the edge and solder said nuts to side casing plates.
