Racing Rules

The US VMYG Guidelines for the Conduct and Management of Racing are based on the current Racing Rules of Sailing  (RRS) as modified in Appendix E.

Class Rating Rules

We have established rules for the following classes of vintage model yachts:

These rules have been established to:

  • Preserve the heritage of vintage model yachts.
  • Guide the spirit of a model event to celebrate the history and enthusiasm for these boats.
  • Race the models for public and personal entertainment in accordance with these rules.
  • To demonstrate a level of individual craftsmanship in the construction of the models in accordance with these rules.
  • To encourage as many individuals as possible to participate in US VMYG events.

All model yachts participating in racing competition sponsored by US VMYG must comply with the appropriate class-rating rules.  It is the responsibility of each skipper to prepare his boat in accordance with the Rules and Specifications.  The intent of the US VMYG is to encourage participation and to simplify any certification or measurement processes as much as is consistent with fair racing.

It is reasonable to expect that the class rules or plans may evolve with time to improve clarity, correct unforeseen problems, or embrace advancing R/C technology.  It is the intent of the class that any potential changes will not disqualify existing boats.

Notice(s) of Race Examples

Here are some previous NORs that you can use to write your NOR.

Awards

The US VMYG gives two awards each year. They have historically been given at the Marblehead event. However, they may be given each year at each event sponsored by the Group if supported by the local regatta committee. The Craftsmanship award may take on forms other than the Stanley plane award prepared by Earl Boebert. Clubs have given plaques in place of that award when necessary.

National Championship Regatta Subsidy Program

$15 per participant, up to a maximum of $300 (first event*)
$10 per participant, up to a maximum of $50 (each additional event*)

The following requirements are necessary for the reimbursement to be made:

Submit the Regatta Dates for Approval
The Regatta Chairman or Club Commodore should seek approval for the regatta from the US VMYG President at least 6 months prior to the event date.

  • The long lead time ensures that the regatta will be on the schedule in at least one issue of The Model Yacht and on the website.
  • This may be done by email or phone: jstoudt309@gmail.com or 610-316-8695

Confirm Participant Eligibility
All participants of the NCR must be members of the US VMYG and/or of their country’s governing body for vintage model yachting.

  • Send the list of participants to the membership secretary/treasurer two weeks prior to the event.
  • The membership secretary can verify the membership status of the participants prior to the regatta.
  • The Regatta Chairman must confirm the status of international skippers prior to the regatta.
  • Late registrants can be dealt with on an individual basis.
  • A participant can be counted twice if sailing in different events.

Submit a Regatta Report
This report should be submitted to President (jstoudt309@gmail.com) and Copy Editor (beck.jeff@gmail.com) within one month of the event.

  • Refer to Writing a Regatta Report for tips (below).

Request Stipend from the Treasurer
The Regatta Chairman or Club Commodore must send a request for the stipend, a copy of the entries with verified US VMYG membership, and the final results to the US VMYG treasurer.

  • Include to whom the check should be made payable and where it should be sent.
  • Request should be sent to usvmygt@gmail.com within 30 days of the completion of the NCR.

NOTE: Place “chevrons” will be provided for each class raced by the Awards Coordinator.

*An event is defined as one regatta i.e. vintage Marbleheads or Skipjacks, etc. If classes are sailed together it will count as one event (regatta) i.e. schooners and International A boats.

Regional Regatta Reimbursement

Each year a coordinator may request a check for $25.00, to help offset expenses at a regional/class event that he/she coordinated. The coordinator should make the president aware of the event beforehand. A request for reimbursement may then be submitted after the event to the president and treasurer with an article and photos of the event.

The Regatta Report can be a simple recap of who attended, what boat they sailed, and some dialogue about the event. Add a few pictures.

Writing a Regatta Report

Requirements for a Report

Start by reading some recent regatta reports in The Model Yacht for examples to help understand these instructions.

Writing the Report
Use Microsoft Word or Google Docs and start with a plain document. Place the name of the regatta on the first line, followed by your name, as author, on the second line.

  • Keep your document basic: no formatting, no tables, no indents, etc. Use Heading 1 to identify sections and Heading 2 to identify subsections of those first sections.
  • It helps to begin by filling in the details in the event Summary.
  • The body of your report could include some of the Summary information in a narrative format along with other details and the flavor of the event.
  • Your report should be no longer than 400 to 500 words. It is better for you to edit your report, rather than for us to hack the word count down to what will fit.
  • The Summary is important because when we need to reduce page count, we will publish only the
