Danson New Forest Dave Waugh 442 ‘are substantially correct and will hope- dicate the sort of information needed to 22 yachts on weekdays a able anyone to find the lakes. Waders are not needed at any of these examples so are not men- tioned. These three were picked because many of Model Boats the important races are held at them and most model yachtsmen will have visited at least one of them; they may not necessarily have used the route suggested, but will recognise that to a stranger it is a logical one with, in each case, a readily identifiable starting point. We could probably describe a couple of dozen or so waters from memory, but even if we got largescale maps to get the roads right, we wouldn't necessarily know positively of any restictions on use or, where there isn't a clubhouse, or an advertised event taking place, when a potential member could turn up and find club activities going on — an omission, incidentally, from the three examples given because of lack of certain knowledge. Apart from this point, we can run another three or four next month, by which time club secs. may have sent us details and within about a twelve-month period we should be able to cover every club’s water. Picking Up Tips Every club should run at least one wellpublicised open day per season, perhaps in conjunction with one of the less formal club races, and encourage non-members with or without a yacht to come along. Local model shops, schools, public libraries and local papers will usually display a notice or, in the case of papers, run a few lines under ‘forthcoming events’, and this column would be happy to include dates and details (needed at least two months beforehand) so that interested parties outside the immediate vicinity but within convenient travelling distance woud also have the opportunity of visiting. The advantages for the visitors woud be that they could receive expert advice and assistance the fun of sailing them with their models and have in company with other yachts; rough handicaps could be set, or separate, totally informal cruises round the buoys could be arranged for different groups of R/C boats of similar size. Nor should it be confined to radio — most of us must have been sorely tempted to interfere with a youngster sailing a toyshop yacht inefficiently, and a notice return and, ultimately, join the club. Five minutes’ loan of a transmitter and a boat out on the water is a powerful persuader. The suggestion is sparked off by the Guildford club's Junior Day, staged in a local park with a worded: ‘How to sail your yacht properly’ should tempt some father and son teams to turn up with their pride and joy. There are considerable numbers of larger yachts, including RMs, in the hands of non-club members and these are the people that are often grateful for advice on setting up and trimming. Another category are those who have found an old model in a junk shop, or dug one out of the attic and would like to refit it. Over the years we have had dozens of letters from people seeking help in just these circumstances, the models ranging from 36s to preWorld War | 10-raters and, of course, a liberal sprinkling of free-lance attempts. One which crops up from time to time is a design which, it is believed, appeared in Practical Mechanics in the 1920s. Most such oldies are just the hull, but some have the spars and, occasionally, an display of club models and information boards for the last five or.six years (July 11 this year) and also by a visit to a new recruit’s house; he had an excellent RM and wanted to make sure it was set up correctly before launching it in public. The sort of help he needed was to be shown that if the yacht was laid on its side, it was possible to squint along the mast and see bends which were not easily discernible with the boat on its stand and to be shown how rigging tension could be varied to adjust the set of the sails. Guildford’s day usually consists of a very informal radio race for under 36in. yachts in the morning (some club members have built small yachts expressly to lend to youngsters) and a tournament (across the small lake and back) in the usual pairs, with anything from 8in. toy yachts to 30-36in. models, in the afternoon. Again, there are usually spare boats to lend out ancient suit of sails, and the desire to refit is usually because of sentimentality (‘my grandfather built it’) or because the workmanship in the hull is impressive, at least to a layman. As far as the club is concerned, they can have a race if hardly anyone turns up, so nothing is lost. If, however, a whole bunch of people arrives (and with adequate publicity this is quite possible) members will thoroughly enjoy helping and advising and will feel they have spent a worthwhile day. This, too, is ‘interest on the hoof’ — the visitors are obviously exhibiting an interest in sailing, and it would be surprising if some didn't and help with trimming etc. is offered. Competitors’ ages run from 3 to about 14 and everyone has a whale of a time. Results are adjusted by a handicap based on the waterline lengths (which sometimes takes a little explaining!) but all the kids get a small prize of some sort and are usually well satisfied. A children’s race as part of a club open day will usually attract the local press, or atleast they'll run areport anda photo or two if submitted promptly; if a couple of club boats are visible in the background, it is very good for the club image and gets it talked about and better-known in the area. It’s a very worthwhile exercise, but its success depends on adequate advance publicity. MODEL YACHTING ASSOCIATION — SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER EVENTS MYA.
