topping lift [R62]: A line that applies upward force on the outer end of the jib boom on a model yacht. The use of a topping lift may be controlled by class rule.
A topping lift is an effective way to control the shape of a jib sail. You can increase the vertical curve of the jib sail by moving the bowsie up and down.
This is a function common in models but less common in full-size boats. If the jib is attached to the deck at a point along the jib boom aft of the jib tack (R59), it provides a “self-vanging” function as described under “Jib Stay” in the “Standing Rigging” article.
This necessarily tensions the leech (R31) of the jib, perhaps to an undesirable degree. A jib topping lift running from the aft end of the jib boom up to where the jib halyard attaches to the mast can counter this excess leech tension and restore proper shape to the jib. Establishing the proper balance between halyard tension and topping lift tension requires care.
