The Beginning Model Yachting Series

Many discussions have been had about all of the different ways to build a model yacht. This is a series of articles for people starting out in model yachting. So, we have decided to keep it as simple as possible. We will be describing the simplest way to build, rig, and sail a model yacht with proven methods and materials. More detailed, complex methods will be written to augment a given technique or process when it is deemed necessary.

Because everyone’s circumstances are different and will need to make different choices along the way, we realized that beginning in model yachting is not a simple step-by-step but more of a “Choose your own adventure” story.

We created a flowchart that shows the different paths that a beginner might take. Diamonds are decisions or choices, and the yellow shaded shapes are articles or article series. Note that each step explodes into a whole series of articles—and as we have found out working through the first series on rigging—a set of reference documents that will be on the website.

All articles in the Beginning Model Yachting Series will have a sidebar like the one you see on this page (at the bottom of the page if you are on a phone). We will be adding articles and series of articles as they become available and the links will turn on. You can also get to the series through the links under “Articles” and “Resources” in the main menu.

For now, dig into The Rig.
