This is a set of two boats and frames cut to build a third. The original (which is in the American Model Yachting Collection at Mystic Seaport Museum) was built by renowned model yachtsman, Gus Lassel of Wilmington, CA. It is a free-sailed boat with a Lassel sliding rig, The boats offered can be finished out and set up for RC sailing.
There are two unfinished hulls that are a little rough but workable. I had started to clean up one hull, fitting in the electronics, providing clearance for the rudder connecting rod, cleaning up the shear line, installing king plank and additional deck beams, and making study marks on the ballast and keel. Lassel built heavy air boats because he lived on the west coast. Slight modifications paying attention to the COE and the CLR would make these competitive boats in the water. Lassel’s boats were fast boats.
My interest in working on this boat was to determine its qualities in the water and to become the Marblehead companion kit to the V36 kit that the USVMYG will be releasing soon.
These were acquired from a man in Maine. He built them using takeoff measurements from the original boat at Mystic Seaport (photo). The rig measurements can be determined from the included photo.
They are both ballasted, with no deck or rig. Both hulls include the fin and bulb and the skeg, as they qualify as traditional Marblehead’s. There is an AJ Fisher jib rack, mast step, 2-shroud racks, a rudder connecting rod, and a rudder in the pile of parts. The old servos are in the box with one sail of unknown origin.
