The jib swivel [R28] takes some of the largest loads of any location on a model yacht. Thus, the pieces of the assembly must be rated accordingly. By that, they must be able to manage the high pressure placed on them.
Materials
- One swivel, rated at 100 lb
- One hook, specified for large loads by SAILSetc
- 2 feet of braided leader line, minimally rated at 100 lb
- One screw eye. Both are the aluminum and brass screw eyes are strong enough for this application
Tools
- Needle nose pliers
- Slip joint pliers
- Scissors
- Cyanoacrylate adhesive (CA)
Procedure
- Using two pairs of pliers, open up the screw eye enough to slide the swivel on to it.
- Close the screw eye, making sure it is closed completely.
SUGGESTION: Lay the main sail, attached to the mast and main boom, on a work surface and measure the distance from the main boom to the “deck.” Tape the hook of the jib swivel assembly to the work surface so that it is in the position if it were engaged in the jib rack. With the screw eye installed in the correct position in the jib boom, tape the jib boom to the work surface
- Take the piece of the braided leader line and loop it through the other hole on the swivel and the hook three times.
- Pull it taught and tie it off, so the length accommodates the jib boom height above the deck. You are looking for the correct alignment relative to the position of the main boom and the deck.
- Take two small pieces of line and tie a loop around this bundle of line at the swivel and again at the hook. Double the knot and secure it with CA.
